Texture Creation

And this one being the other guide.

keywords
create, paint, alpha, texture, textures.

I'm just going to briefly explain how to do this, in order to understand it you have to have read BaRRaKID's tutorial on custom textures which can be found here: http://forum.interlopers.net/viewtopic.php?t=1826

Its easier to describe this process using an example, so lets say you wanted to make a dirt road texture. What you do is you make two textures, one for what you want the standard dirt road texture to look like and one that is darker or rockier so that it looks a bit like a pothole perhaps. Save the files in one folder as BaRRaKID instructed, I recommend saving the files as dirtroad1 and dirtroad2. Then compile the textures and go to the folder where the .vmt and .vtf files are and create a new .vmt file. I think you can call it whatever you want, but going along with this example, lets call it dirtroad.vmt
Within this file should be the following information (minimum):

Code: Select all
"WorldVertexTransition"
{
"$baseTexture" "folder name/dirtroad1"
"$basetexture2" "folder name/dirtroad2"
"$surfaceprop" "dirt"
"%keywords" "cstrike"
}

If you really wanted to go all out with the texture you would also have a dirtroad1_height.tga and a dirtroad2_height.tga (which I have no clue what they are used for) and the bump map textures. If you have the bump map textures then the dirtroad.vmt you created would look like this

Code: Select all
"WorldVertexTransition"
{
"$baseTexture" "folder name/dirtroad1"
"$basetexture2" "folder name/dirtroad2"
"$surfaceprop" "dirt"
"$bumpmap" "folder name/dirtroad1_bump"
"$bumpmap2" "folder name/dirtroad2_bump"
"%keywords" "cstrike"
}

For an example of the Paint Alpha stuff go to cstrike_sample_content/material/sample2 and cstrike_sample_content/materialsrc/sample2.
Hope this helps some people.

Can you have a '$surfaceprop2' as well? For a blend between maybe snow and dirt.

the "keyword" is while searching for textures in the browser, you can type down the keyword and all the textures with a matching keyword will show up :)
