I was wondering if it was possible to make two separate skyboxes. I'm guessing no but I can hope, can't I?

Why would you even need 2? I cannot think of any reason why you would even need 2, maybe you do not fully understand how a 3d skybox works? What is it you want to do?

Yes, I have two separate areas connected by teleports. Right now I have a makeshift "skybox" around one of the areas, mostly so you can't see the real skybox :P

That's what I figured, just wanted to see if it was even remotely possible.

do you have to have the 0 0 0 coords within the playable area of the map? What if those coords are not within the actual map? Can you still make a 3d skybox?

Those co-ordinates do not have to be in the playable area.

Hey guys:

Good tutorial. I'm having trouble matching the lighting in the 3d skybox with the lighting in
the playable area. I have a light_environment in both the 3d skybox and the playable area
and they are exactly the same. The attached image shows the problem. The playable area
has shadows but the 3d skybox does not.

Any idea why?

Does it matter where in the playable area and 3d skybox the light_environment is located?

Thanks,
Dieparbaby

I'm not sure if, anybody understands what you've just asked. At least I don't.
Post some screenshots. That will help us understand better.

Creating-a-3D-Skybox theory

Postby kkirspel on Thu Dec 18, 2008 7:58 am

Basically, from what I gather by the video tutorial, is that everything that the sky_camera can see (hopefully only what is in the box with the camera, and not your playable map) is scaled up for gameplay and that actually tools/transform/scale is only going to be needed to compare the scaled stuff to whatever you create as your tiny environment, seeing as you will, or at least can, delete everything you scale down (reference objects from the main level) except, of course, the sky_camera.

So, if you really wanted to, and knew what you’re doing, you could, theoretically, go into your map, make a hollowed box off to the side of your map, put a sky_camera in the middle of it somewhere, and set up you mini props around it, right? I mean, if you went through trial and error a few times getting the props in the right places and sizes, this would be all you needed to do.

…is there any point at which I errored in my speculation?

You could do what you've said, but that seems a pointless thing to do as you'd take forever to get it spot on. It'd it be like making a map without the camera view and compiling it each time to see how things looked.

Too true, I was just trying to get it wrapped around my head how it would work. Thanks for the respond back, though!
