Ah, there is your error.

Load the map, run buildcubemaps then when it finishes load the map again (do not quit the game, just load the map again) and it will save the cubemaps to the .bsp and all should work.

Tried that too. And what good is buildcubemaps if it doesn't stay when you close the bsp?

When I ran Packrat, I saw all of the cubemaps listed. So they're there. The rest of the world changes in relation to the new cubemaps immediately. I've restarted the engine, so that should take care of any "pesky" hold outs.

It stays for everyone else, if you don't restart the map it won't save them. It's all in the tutorial to be honest

Well then perhaps I never did try it. I thought I had fairly methodically gone through every single permutation that crossed my mind. I'll try it out during lunch.

I had always assumed the tutorial had just meant that you needed to restart the level to view the changes.

I just don't see how I could have possibly missed doing this... I was running it for a good part of a day in windowed mode restarting it pretty consistantly while trying to get the material to look right in game. I just assumed at some point I had actually restarted.

Ok just to be sure. By restart, it's ok to say goto the console and say
Disconnect
and then create a new server running it.

or do I need to do some form of "retry"?

ok i placed my cubemaps like it says in the tutorial. (ie. some in the well lit areas under my spots, and some in the dark areas in the surrounding brush.) all seems to look good when i run buildcubemaps command, and then restart the map. however after typing in the command, i get this:

is something wrong? did i place them in bad areas? or is this normal during the build cubemap process? or is this another problem entirely? :?

is there more than just placing them, I found that when you go into the properties you can select faces to apply the cubemap to....this appears as lines originating at the cubemap and connecting to the faces you specify. I have not seen any obvious effect from doing this and am wondering if there is a use for doing this.

Sorry to bump, but I searched and found nothing that relates to my problem, thought maybe someone might have an idea on how to solve this issue:

Whenever I run buildcubemap CS freezes and I get this error:

Image

Now I *think* it is running out of memory, but how do I bump up the memory allocation for source?

[edit] I just realised I ran fast VIS and RAD, trying again. I wonder if it is also affected by the fact I am running CSS in 400 x 600 res.?

[edit2] Nope, Full VIS and RAD and it still caused the error.

Could it be because the 3d skybox is visible to the cubemaps?

It is just a large square with brushes scattered around at angles, perhaps it is the overdose of nonstandard angles?

Do I need to be in developer mode?

[edit3] Resolution at 800 x 600 and it works fine. Hope this helps somebody.

yeah, you need to turn up the resolution when building cube maps, else it'll explode. i think its something like the resolution of the cubemaps or whatnot. (400 x 600 res? why?)

Reload the map, as I stated in the tutorial.

I built the cubemap, watched all the pics being taken, when it was done it took me back to console, once there it says the bounce shit, and underneath the creating default cubemaps it set it back to the sky cubemaps.... when i reload the map it is indeed using the sky cubemap as the conslole said it would... is there any way to make it Not go back to the default sky

What you have done is correct, upon rstarting the map the actual cubemaps are then used, for models textures etc, I see no problem.

Hello mates I have putted my cube maps, but look what it happends!

Image

Why I can see the floor so claearly?? And the papers decal?? There is a cube map un this room, and out there is another under a spot light.

There are two more models on the room and the are dark, like my weapon, thats good, but not the floor... :(

The light spot is so far away, and the radius dont touch this room anyway!

What I do wrong?

Thanks

:?: Question: If I have a cubemap under a light source, and that light source has the option of being 'shot' or 'turned' off, is there a way to change cubemaps, or turn the one under it off, to correctly display the change to darkness? or will it do that automatically?
