Same as above but with wood.

Now for the second part of the base texture tutorials, i will explain some techniques used to create wood like textures. Here are some examples of possible results:

Image

Image

Image

So let's start with texture number one:

1. First thing is to create the base, and it's almost the same thing we did with the metal textures. The colors i'm using in this example are background color: #998675, and foreground color #534741. After selecting the colors, do a Filter>Render>Clouds. This is a nice start for the texture, since it will make dark/bright random places, you could also had used a flood fill, or a gradient here, but the clouds give a better effect.

Image

2. Second step is to add some noise, so go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise, and use has settings:
Amount: 30
Distribution: Uniform
Monochromatic: checked

3. Now the last filter is a motion blur, Filter>Blur>Motion Blur, with the angle set a 0, and the distance at 50

Image

You may had noticed that the left and right sides of the texture look really bad, that's because the motion filter "pulls" all the pixels from the sides to the midle. So to solve this problem we are going to delete the sides. First you select the Free Transform Tool(hotkey ctrl+t), and stretch the two sides of the texture, untill the bad pixels disapear. After doing this press enter to apply the transformation. Now altough you can't see the sides you have just moved, they are still there, underneath the layer, so we need to crop them. Select the crop tool(hotkey C), and do a square that fits your entire texture, and press enter.

Now you have the most basic wood texture.

Texture number 2:

1. Texture number two is pretty much the same has number one, but it has one extra filter that makes the curves you see in the picture. So repeat all the steps from number one, but change the distance of the motion blur to 70.

2. Step number 2 may be a bit hard to understand, wath we are going to do is add a shear filter(Filter>Distort>Shear). First thing to do is to make sure Wrap Around is selected. After doing this, has you may see, there is a square with a black line in the midle, move this line to the sides at diferent points, to create a wave, here is a picture to help you out:

Image

after doing this click ok, and you get texture number 2.

Image

Texture number 3:

1. This is the more complex, but the one with more detail, and wich gives a better effect in my opinion. Start by doing two Filter>Render>Clouds, and two Filter>Render>Diference Clouds(you can use hotkey ctrl+f to repeat the last used filter).

Image

2. Now that you have the base, let's do a FILTER>TEXTURE>CRAQUELURE, use the following settings:

crack spacing: 25
crack depth: 6
crack Brightness: 9

this would define how our final texture will look like, so if you encrease/ decrease the crack spacing field, the texture would have more/less detail, i like to keep it in the midle, because it may make it to hard to tile.

Image

3. This step will make it look more like wood, so do a FILTER>BLUR>MOTION BLUR, with a angle of 0, and distance of 50.

Image

4. Now we are just going to had more randomness to the texture:
- Filter>noise>add noise, 5%, gaussian, monochromatic
- Filter>Texture>texturizer, with the Sandstone texture, 100% of scaling, and 4 of relief, use wathever light direction you wan't.
After this do another motion blur as in step 3, but change the distance to 10.

Image

You may notice that we have the same problem again with the sides, so just stretch, and crop them has before.

5. Last step, wich may be a bit hard to follor, is to Liquify the texture. Use the hotkey Shift+Ctrl+X or choose Filter>Liquify. There are lot's of options in this tool, i'm not going to explain wath each one does, just the ones that we need. First thing is to change the brush size and pressure acording to your needs, you can see this option on the right panel under TOOL OPTIONS. I'm using size 30, and pressure 50.

Now select the Puccker tool, by pressing P, and click and drag, from left to right, like if you where paiting on top of the texture, nad try not to click near the boarders. Do the same thing but this time using the Bloat tool,by pressing B.
If you wan't to add some wood nodes, use the twirl tool, by pressing L or R, and keep it pressed in the same place, untill you think it's okey. Then just press ok, and that's it.

i know the knot doesn't look that good in here, but if you use the dodge and burn tool, to make it more defined, you get a better result
I've no sign

So you can make it tile afterwards!

oh, i know how to do it, i would just imagine that that would also belong into a "how to make a texture" tutorial.
