description
Go round and round on a spiral ramp.

keywords
spiral, ramp, spiral ramp, vertex tool, vertex, tool, arch tool, arch.

This tutorial will show you how to create a simple spiralling ramp using the arch tool and vertex manipulation. If you’re not sure how to use the arch tool or vertex tool please refer to these tutorials before continuing.

Arch Tool: http://forum.interlopers.net/viewtopic.php?t=2249

Vertex Tool: http://forum.interlopers.net/viewtopic.php?t=2860

Now let’s start by creating our arch. It can have as many sides as you like and can be as wide as you like. Just make sure that you specify a number for "add height". Its best if this number is the same amount as the height of the brush. Making this number higher will make the ramp steeper; making it lower will decrease the slope.

Once your arch is created it should look similar to this one.

Image

We now need to clip sections of the arch. Please refer to the picture below to see how the arch should be clipped. Take not of the direction that each section is being clipped.

Image

Now it's time to use the vertex manipulation tool.

Start by selecting one of the triangular pieces from a clipped section. Grasp only the top vertices that are touching the next section.

Image

Then move these vertices straight up until they touch the top edge of the next section.

Then grab the top vertices of the other triangle of that section and move it up also.

Do this for every section and triangle. Once you’re finished you should have a spiral ramp that looks similar to this one.

Have you tried compiling that and running it in game? In my previous ramped spiral adventures, when you compile it the vertex's move around and it doesn't stay rampy at all.

As long as the vertices are on the grid they won't move. I have compiled several different types of ramps and they all came out fine. If you had problems take a screenshot and I can help you out.

Sweet. That editor looks like it can accomplish a lot. How did you find out about it?

When you are using the clipping tool, is it actually deleting parts of the brush that arent outlined in white or is it just dividing the brush in to multiple brushes but isnt removing sections of it from the map? Because my clipping tool dosnt divide brushes into smaller ones, it just basically cuts away un-outlined peices of the brush. Please inform me on how to change the clipping tool settings if there is a way.

Shift x will toggle through the modes. Which is either one of the two parts of the brush yoru cutting, or it will let you keep your whole brush, but cuts it into 2 brushes. So it sounds like all you need to do is press shift x till you get to the mode that you want. Remember that the part outlined in white is the part that will be kept. Hope that helps.
Don't know what that had to do with this tutorial though. :/ Good tutorial, btw. :)

I can't do the clipping part of it. It clips the object beyond the two dots. How can I make it so it only clips in between the two dots?

you have to keep making the grid smaller till the dots line up.

I once made a map I never finished, but it had a car park ramp in it, that went up a spiral pole. I used the same technique... :D Also, very nice tutorial Spartan...

No, the problem isn't with lining up the clipping line. It's getting the tool to clip what I want. In this pic:

I only want to clip what is between the two white dots, but the line extends and clips beyond them. How am I supposed to clip what the tutorial says to if it's clipping stuff I don't want? Is there something I missed on how to do this?
