Custom Sprays

Postby Tutorial on Fri Jun 03, 2005 2:08 pm

This tutorial will show you how to create a custom spray to be used in CSS and HL2DM.

Start off by choosing the picture you’re going to use. I have already taken a pre-existing picture that I made. You now need to resize the picture. It should be 32 x 32, 64x64, 128x128, or 256x256 pixels.

Once resized, the picture needs to be saved as a TGA file. Give the spray any name you like and then save it to a folder that will be convenient enough for you to find.

Once you hit "Save" a small box will appear called "Targa Options". The image should be selected as 24 bits/pixels or 32 bits/pixels.

Note that I am using Photoshop to save the spray. If your using Paintshop Pro you need to specify the "Targa Options" by clicking on the "Options" button in the "Save As" window before saving the spray.

Now it's time to test out your new spray. Go to the Multiplayer tab in the Options menu of the game (In this situation the game is CSS). Click on "Import Spray" and browse for your spray. Then select it and enter a new match. You will now have your very own custom spray.

Um... you don't need to do most of that stuff. The Import Spray option will take pretty much any common image file type (JPEG, GIF, ect). Also, you don't need to resize it, as the spray importer does this automatically when it's imported and converted to VTF. Unless this has changed recently it should be the same.

No it won't. It needs to be sized and saved as a TGA file. I got an error when trying to upload a spray that was not saved as a TGA.

*sigh* Since you can't just take my word for it, here's a tutorial to replace (or correct, rather) yours:

First off just start with an image saved as a JPEG, BMP, ect (some may not work so I suggest just using .jpg). For this tutorial we'll just use something simple and to the point, for demonstration purposes only, of course...

Image

Then launch the Source game of your choice and go to Options, a dialog box should prop up that has a bunch of options. You should see something that says "Import Spray". Now just navigate to the directory of your image as seen here.

Image

Click ok and a little thumbnail of your spray should show up in the box beside the import spray button like this:

Image

Just hit Apply and go into a game and it should work just fine. Here's a shot of that spray in cs_compound:

That wasn't so hard, was it?

WTF? I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out ways to get CSS to load the spray properly. I kept getting errors. This is the proper way a spray should be made.

Using a tga is surely the best way- that way you can have transparancy in a seperate channel without losing all your colours.

Don't get all bent out of shape about it, Spartan. I didn't mean any offense. I was just showing that you don't really have to do all those extra steps if you don't want to.

Spartan is best to be ignored. He still has some slivers in his ass from the broom handle. I told him to use plastic, but he insisted on wood. You know how he is...

That's alright. I thought you were trying to be an ass about the tutorial which I had spent so long getting to work right.
