Part 2 - Interesting Doorways
This is not so much a tutorial, but more a guide to adding detail, and hopefully helps get your creative juices going so you can create your own variety and style. Let’s get started.
Interesting Doorways
Small Doorways
Making door ways more interesting can be a great way to spice up a plain area, or an area that’s missing that certain something. A detailed doorway certainly beats a square hole in the wall any day. This first example is quite simple, by adding a door frame to the end of a corridor can make it look much better:
To make one of these, firstly draft out the size of your doorway by using the dev_door texture, and cut the wall accordingly.
Now you need to cut the actual door frame brush and delete the bit we don’t need.
Then texture it with a suitable door texture, and you’re done!
Larger Doorways
When you’ve got quite a sizeable hole in your wall, it pays to add some sort of trim, or border. As a quick example, this

As you can see, by simply adding a frame or border to any door way makes it seem more real, and adds detail to your map. For ideas, check out VALVe’s maps:
