I like those old greek column like pillars. Those are neat.

The pillar in your first picture uses way more brushes then it needs, you can create the same object using 1 brush and the cliping tool, the clipping tool is your friend, do not be afraid of it . . .

And yeah, way too many brushes for a pillar like that. That is how I did things a loooooong time ago, long b4 I knew how to use Texture Application (a whole brush per face of a crate )
