Model Battle #0: Combine [Ended]

Postby Jest@ on Thu Aug 16, 2007 1:37 am

This Battle has now closed. I'll leave this thread open for comments, post-mortem, etc. Please let me know your thoughts on the Model Battles here

Well, here we go! Welcome to the experimental Model Battle, Number Zero! To give some time for rules to be tweaked etc, this one will be a test-run, but hopefully it'll produce some nifty results.

The theme is The Combine. We've all had enough of HL2 stock content, so let's breathe some fresh life into the Combine's spikey, assymetric, uniform blue-grey design language. The challenge here is to keep the Combine look and feel, but still show us something we haven't seen before. Barricades, walls, machinery, a new turret, maybe a small vehicle...let's see what you've got.

The polycount limit for this is a generous 2000 triangles: around the same as a large combine wall-cluster, almost twice as much as a combine sentry-gun. The texture limit is a reasonable 512x512

The competition will run until 12.00GMT Monday 27nd August, giving you around 10 days. I'll leave it up to you to figure out time zones, daylight savings etc for now, I'll post some final times around the world when I'm not so tired.

Any problems, lemme know by PM or email. As well as the rules above, the general rules apply: if needed, we'll update them as we go, and a final set of rules for this battle will be posted as the deadline approaches.

Don't like the theme? If you want it changed, If enough of you appeal quickly enough below, I might just change it. And don't forget to add your dream themes to the shiney newSuggestions threadtoo.

Secure your place in history, with an entry to Model Battle Zero! Huzzah!

Seems like a good idea, I should have time to try it.

Good job keeping a generous polys. Too many contests go for low low numbers, this is the future now so everyone can go higher! :-D

I find it kinda odd to have a 512 by 512 texture on a 2k model, but the theme is cool, and I'll be submitting something I think.

Since the combine don´t have a boat yet, i guess i´m going to do a boat. Here´s a sketch of a troop transporter catamaran. I´m not very experienced with the combine, so does this look combinish enough?

Looks more spacecraftish than boatish.

Remember, the Combine like to mix their organic and their metallic.

Heres my current thing, whipped up in 30 mins. I'm no where near a good modeller to let everybody know.

Its going to be some sort of combine bike, I'm just making it up as I go along. 470 polys so far.

Sorry about the image being grainy, I've no idea why it is grainy, my other renders aren't.

mmh... ok, i made the outside swimmer thingies a bit broader.

Remember, the Combine like to mix their organic and their metallic.

Yeah, but they´ve also got purely anorganic ones, like the helicopter and the APC. I´m not such a big fan of this organic/anorganic combination. Reminds me a bit of this freakish Id Software Doom/Quake style which i´m not a big fan of.

Here are a couple of renders. Which one´s better? The one with the round, sharp edged swimmers or the flat one. I think the flat one is more combinish.

Looks brilliant, even if its a bit tall imo.

I would totally take part in this, i love the combine theme, but i have no time to be modeling right now.

G'luck guys.

I think the sharp edged is more combinish. There's no shooth edges in Valve's combine models you know. :D

@ cardboard:

Needs weaponry

And the first shot is better, but I'd say add some verticle petrusions from the top of the floats.
