Map Battle 20 - Film Noir [Extended yet again - Monday]

Black and white, suspenseful, dramatic and stylish to the core - Film Noir rocks. For the uninitiated, think Sin City, but older and better.

The battle this time round is to produce something inspired by film noir - the crime scene, the dark smoky alleyway, the femme fatale and the tall dark stranger, the brooding detective...you choose. Or, for a twist, do a little futurist/sci-fi noir combo, a la Blade Runner.

There's an extra rule to this battle - the final entries must be black and white, or very heavily desaturated (only a tiny bit of colour left). For most people, this can be achieved in-engine using color correction. If your computer still doesn't support it then get a new one! then I'll allow you to do the desaturation in photoshop, or email me your screenshots and I'll do it for you.

I'll try and provide some extra content for you guys, to help take you back to the 1940s, but can't promise anything.

The competition will run for 3 weeks, with an extension if WIP-showers request. That means the closing date and time is Tuesday 18th ...Thursday 20th ...Sunday 23rd ...Monday 24th September, at midnight UTC(GMT). So slap on your fedora, suck back a cigarette, leave the gin and the classy broad back at the bar, and get mapping while you wait for your checkered past to catch up with you.

Expressionist lighting ftw!

I'm not the greatest mapper but I may enter this one just because I love the genre so much. Maltese Falcon and the Third Man are some of my favorites :D

Shame I've never seen it, or plan on seeing it. But I get the overall idea anyway. Lets just see if I can get a good idea.

i've got a proposition for you fellow 'lopers; i've got a 1920's car modelled which I will allow you to use in this map battle. there are conditions though:-

-you have to make your own skin for it
-you CANNOT distribute the model

Image

NOTE: You would need basic modelling and skinning skills because I will be sending the reference .smd which you would need to UV, skin and compile

anybody wants to take me up on the offer, send me a PM

Wow, that's very kind of you, Mr. Greenfish! I may do a simple 'basic' skin for it if I have time, I have some other content for you guys in progress at the moment.

Remember, for that true noir look, it's worth playing around with other Color Correction options (most particularly, Contrast). Flat grayscale can look a little washed-out, a contrast nudge will do wonders. Of course, designing decent high-contrast lighting in the first place is half the challenge.
