How the Texture Battles work
You'll be given a primary material type (like metal, plaster, brick) and will have about 10-14 days to complete a texture. Sometimes there'll be other constraints:
Often you'll be given a layout; your texture must include the shape of the layout. You can make small tweaks to the layout, but its overall form must remain clear. Putting it in the normal/specular map isn't enough, it must be in the diffuse texture.
If you're not given a layout, then you'll be given a rough visual style (eg urban, futuristic, natural) to follow.
You may also be given a secondary material type which has be included somewhere in the texture - eg if the primary material was plaster, and the secondary material was brick, you could add a brick trim to the bottom, or patches of brick showing through cracked plaster, etc.
Your texture should only include the given material types, don't do something else and just put them in a token corner.
That said, small additions (nuts and bolts on wood, or a half-torn-down poster on brick) that don't dominate the texture are more than welcome.
Your textures must tile, in at least one direction.
Naturally, there's some room for interpretation in themes and styles, but please try to stay within reasonable parameters - without restrictions, or with too much flexibility, the competition becomes pointless, and we'll be forced to disqualify people for veering too far.

As with other battles, submit your final images in the battle thread. When the time limit is up, the thread will be closed and your image will be collated into a thread where your fellow interlopers will vote on your work. Please always indicate whether your images should be considered final, or only WIP.
