Map Battle 22 - Alien Architecture

Postby Jest@ on Fri Jan 18, 2008 3:16 am

Extraterrestrial Edifices.
Transdimensional Towers.
Hyperspace Habitations.
Stellar Structures.
Amazing alliteration.

Time to raise your mapping skills to the stars, time to look beyond the constraints of our feeble race, and conjure up visions of what architecture might be like on alien worlds. Show us your visions of ET's hometown. What we're looking for here is novel - but not too implausible - ideas on what other races in other times and places might consider pleasing yet functional. What shapes would their buildings take? Their grand lobbies, their tenement blocks? Their temples, their shopping malls? What decorations, styles, colours, tastes and materials might they employ?

Go a little crazy, show us something really unique. Remember, though, that battles are meant to be useful for your general mapping/design skills - it's best not to go too crazy with the laws of physics and claim the weird bendy building you design would work "cos my aliens have special magical super-steel". For the same reason, it's probably wisest to stick to visions of more-or-less humanoid lifeforms: because otherwise your pics won't make sense without explanation, which negates a good visual impact. And don't forget - the basics of architecture don't necessarily require custom content. Don't neglect the brushwork!

Rules? You know the drill. And if you don't, check the rules sticky. 3 screenshots, to be submitted in this thread before the deadline. They'll go up for a forum vote shortly after. Only official valve games can be used, and that doesn't include GMOD. Custom content, however, is more than welcome! The battle will run for 3 weeks + a weekend, so it'll end at Midnight GMT, Monday 11th February. Follow this link for closing times around the world. I'll extend only if we have a couple of wip-showers begging for it.

I'm open to the idea of a video battle, if there are enough people who want to do it. There would have to be a resolution limit, a time limit (30 secs?), maybe a filesize limit, and restrictions on how much video editing you could do (I'd permit a few wipes/fades, but not much else). If people want to do this, they'll be voted on separately. If enough people are keen I'll open up a separate thread for discussing the rules etc.

This map battle also sees the addition of a second moderator to the proceedings, so you can be certain of prompt closing, voting, etc. And who is this mystery moderator?

oo, sounds interesting.

As for submitting a video for a contest, that too would be cool, but you would have to clamp down on what is/is not allowed. A 30 second video can actually be quite long, but I think its a good start. To keep true to the pure nature of the contest, I would say the base of the video be: 3-10 second clips (ala 3 screen shots), 2-15 second clips, or 1-30 second clip.

To ensure the voting is focused on the map itself, and not the video, I would also say that in-game sounds should be usable (opens up more possibilities for the map battles), but no music track, no type/image overlays, and no transitions. I would liken these rules to the ban of GMOD and Photoshop from the current map battles, allowing only the mapping to be on display.

I'm probably in if I can think of an idea.

I don't think the video would be a good idea, screens work fine.

Gay. I have no computer I can use to map with. Maybe my old one but it doesn't have a great graphics card. :(

I have such a great idea in mind too.

I've made tons of custom textures already but I'm having trouble with the vmt's :( and they won't appear in-game yet.
