Seems like you talked a bit too soon :-D

I also changed the thread title so that people know they need to vote again

well melvin! congrats on that man.
the simplicity is almost over the top, but it was the only one that gave ma an alienated feel of the unknown and the mystery, which imo is what aliens are all about!
desktopped it!

Voted for Melvin this time instead of Notary, I really like the effort Notary has put in but Melvin's is just so evil.

I voted for vcool. The overall quality of his work is most impressive. Melvin's scene is very artistic. He gains my (non-existing) creativity award - but in the end, I think excellent mapping work should be rated higher. All other entries look nice, too, but you only have one vote *g*

It was a tough decision, but I decided to go with Zipfinator's entry. His map is pretty lush and I like it. No one tried to imitate an alien world with the use of foliage except for him, and he did a pretty fine job of it. Good work man!

904, you were almost my choice but the textures you used for the ground were just...not pleasing to me. The really contrasted layers of sedimentary rock all over the ground looks really odd to me. The displacements themselves are very smooth and well-done though, and the structure in that canyon looks pretty cool, especially the dishes on the roofs.

I actually joined these forums to vote because Zipfinator told me to, but I cant choose anything because I think that notarys, zipfinators, vcools and melvins are awesome. So to not make a biased vote I wont vote at all

If everyone thought that way we would end up with a no winners or losers and thats pretty strange in a contest...

* RawMeat3000, overlit...
* BiologicalBum, nice shapes, especially the last shot. it seems rather unfinished though
* Kodox, I like it, seems like a real building that could have a real function. too much combinish look made me not pick it.
* Melvin, the threat expressed in the shot it very good, but then it doesn't strike me as alien architecture, but as an alien warship, which doesn't fit the assignment we were given.
* notary's - Sauron meets Stalin - I like it, too much randomness though.
* punky, the textures are good, your shapes are alien, but the 'box' around it sort of kills it..
* vcools is very cool and good looking, but I can't really identify with it.
* Zipfinator, I like contrast between the hard structures and the 'soft' surroundings, the lighting fits nicely and gives an alien feel.
as for my own entry (in response to nub): the 3rd shot was sort of the angle I designed the whole scene for and that is where the texture works well, I decided not to rotate it around (or replace it all together) on other canyon walls to prevent ugly texture alignment. I intended it to be a blend-texture, but I had no time to implement that. So I sort of agree with you, but I thought it could fit the theme without being annoying.

Anyway, my vote went to Zipfinator. And congrats to Notary, I think you've won this one :)

I know, I had to rip the whole damn thing apart to get it small enough to compile before I had to catch my plane. Plus it was the first HDR compile I've ever done, so... ya, that's my excuse.

Next one will be better.
