Map Battle 26 - Underground

Postby Jest@ on Sat Jul 26, 2008 11:00 am

Thanks to everyone who took part in the last (hugely successful) battle; a stunning 20 entries, all putting out good-quality work on the difficult theme of 'Something's Not Right'. But, there's no rest for the wicked/insane, for here, in all it's glory, is Map Battle 26!

This time round, the theme is a bit more down-to-earth -- in fact, it's below the earth. That's right, the theme for you to tackle this time is Underground. Now, there's plenty of scope in there, from mineshafts to city transport, but can you really bring out the sense of being underground, rather than just a place with no windows? Time to find out! Thanks to Megadude for suggesting a theme I've always wanted to do ;). Come and voice your opinions over at the suggestions thread.

The deadline for entries is going to be Tuesday 19th August, giving you a little bit over 3 weeks. The exact deadline is midnight GMT Zulu: click here for the closing time in your time zone

As usual, the basic rules are: up to 3 screenshots from an official Valve Source-engine game. That's about it. No photoshopping, custom content is allowed, it doesn't have to be playable. Post them in this thread before the deadline, and you'll end up in the vote!

The full details can be found, as always, in the rules thread. As always, if there's something I've forgotten, or you have a question, let me know!

Sounds like this is going to be good :)

Pity I can't enter, but going on holiday, so when I get back you all better have some nice levels for me to look at! :-D

One idea that I think could work well is a level showing the inside of an Ants nest. You know those glass containers where you can look at the side and see all their tunnels...

Nice simple idea.

Sweet, I've got an idea for this. Gives me a reason to open up hammer, which I have been avoiding for a couple of weeks.

I sure hope we get to see some godlike displacements in this one :D

Anyways I might be in. Don't really have anything but work going on right now so I got some spare time on my hands.

EDIT: I'll give ya a hint.

I hope I can enter this. Don't know whether I can fix my Orange Box games in time and finish the map for battle before August 13th (First day of school)

Looks ok so far Revan, but it doesn't truely grab me as underground yet. It seems to be more like a concrete building.

My displacement skills need to be improved so I hope I can somehow pull of a underground facility feel. Similiar to black mesa.

Damn this is going to be a hard one.....so much will depend on lighting, which I've never been very good with. I'm flying back from vacation today, so looks like I'll have a good solid chunk of time to work on this.

I would ask if I could use my old underground lab map but it would be consider cheating especially seeing as I have alot of it done. I'm working on something else anyways, sort of an underground silo but I think I may have some carts running over it and inside.

Just be careful with these underground labs and whatnot.. It's easy to make a lab and just say that it's underground. Make sure that people are able to see that it's underground without having to explain that it is.
