I like battles that stress number of brushes, map size, number of props, light levels, number of rooms, types of weapons, types of enemies, etc. Something that pushes creative problem-solving.

No Props/Models of any kind (Just brushes)

Only Custom Content (Very hard for those of us who don't model or texture.)

Video Challenge (Maps made with the intent of being used in a video)

Map You're Computer (Take a pic of the inside of you're comp and map it!)

Specific caps on items i think is up to 904, since i could pull any sort of mapping cap out of my ass....

Yeah, good ideas. The Custom Content one would be something that scares some people away. I like the no props/models or something similar since it's clear on the rules but open for creativity. Having a couple of clear rules like the Limitation battle http://www.interlopers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=32024 (build within a 1024 cube) is good.

I was recently highly impressed by the final level of the original Painkiller game, "Hell". There you see a war environment with all kinds of explosions, including a nuclear blast... but it is all frozen, and you can view it from all angles as you fight ethereal enemies.

I've never participated in a battle - mapping is not my thing. But when I first visited, I thought that Map meant "map" as well, not "still scene". "Mapping battle" might have been less misleading.

Yes but it is a "Battle" where people compete by "Mapping" or making a "Map"
Depending on the theme it usually is "Aesthetic Mapping" or making a "Map" with which is not required it be Playable.

Thus really its the same words thrown around, might as well use simple words.

Like "Map Battle"
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen

Yeah, I get it. I wasn't suggesting that the name be changed or anything. Just sharing my personal story ^^

Back on topic, how about:
Heights

You know... the stuff that people with fear of heights are afraid of.

How about Dynamic Map backgrounds (like in this tut:http://www.interlopers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33359)? Then they could be shared around and used, rather than ending up as forgotten screenshots.

I find it such a shame that so much talent and beauty gets poured in to unusable maps.
Mappers Top Tip #548
Lighting: The arrangement, hue and intensity of one or multiple light sources.
Lightning: A dazzling discharge of electric sparks in the atmosphere, often preceding thunder.

We're not revisiting anything playable anytime shortly. (read: other than screenshots )

There are numerous maps that end up playable, mostly mod-related.

Could one be puzzle related?

This puzzle will not be played, but instead you must make a map featuring a very complex puzzle, however not TOO complex that noone knows what to do. (if they had to play it). Possible limitations:

1. You can only use a certain amount of props and have to resort to more brush-based entities.

2. You have a limited amount of brushes and have to resort to more props.

3. The puzzle must be visually pleasing and/or everything fits ONE theme.

Sorry for the big bump but since the Evil Lair Map Battle is about to end I think it's a good idea to give some ideas for the next Map Battle:
- Ruins - Enginuity
- Nature - Underwater
- Factory - Eco-friendly
- Fire - Science

another theme suggestion:

"a world in the making" - it could be it part dev-textures - part real textures, a half-built lego city, an early earth-landscape or whatnot.
