R.I.P Interlopers Map Battles 3rd June 2005 - 21st June 2011

It's not dead, we should try another one and offer a $10 steam game or something.

Sure. Since you suggested it why don't you buy the prize?

Hey guys, I'm back from the dead.

So, seeing as it's the 8th but the topic is still open I presume it's in a limbo? Should I enter or steer clear?

If you think about it, a lot of the early map battles were successful because the contestants were usually very enthusiastic about their work because they had big plans to get in to the industry.

Its a shame about this really. I wanted to do it, but there is no point if there is only 1 or 2 entrants. Not really the fault of the community so much as it is to do with valve's retarded release schedule. I could go on about this, but I'm certain the majority of you folks know where I'm headed with this.

We need to change this, we need more playable maps on more engines, maybe even a modern engine showdown (udk, cry3) Something innovating. Source is old now we just gotta accept that.

I believe I might be in the denial stage.

And on the side of the contest, I mean using the Source engine already means that you are using different versions (purely by age) if you use different games, so why not include UDK and what-not.

Motivates Source-users to poop rainbows to make maps that can beat the Unreal engine.

Edit: then again, Source just refuses to go down. It's kinda like this: http://www.moddb.com/mods/twisted-insurrection
Looking at that gives me hope...

It is my firm belief that if EP3 doesn't significantly update the source engine, source development within the modding community is going to whither and die for the most part. So with that, I hope EP3 boasts something to hold up to cryengine 3. Seriously, bsp sucks, static lighting is archaic, being limited to one dynamic light without modding sucks, hammer sucks, batch compiling is a pain in the ass, limiting polys and tex res is annoying, and limiting design constraints to certain number of brushes is just annoying already. They've done amazing things with the source engine, but in the end it's going to be comparable to getting an old 386 to browse the modern internet.

it's pretty negative but a little true

reminds me of that interview of a while ago with them praising the source engine for various things.. it made me giggle a bit
