tbh even if ppl dont join in too much, i think you should still run 'em. It cant be thaaaat much work running it (if neccesarry, i'd help) and when it produces results, it really produces results.
Try this for a crowd-pleaser: hook up with a good-looking mod that's recruiting, but only recruiting talented people...run a map battle loosely themed on that mod and offer possible (hopefully likely) recruitment for the winner(s). Obviously, depends a lot on the mod, but would get ppl interested.
I reeeealy wanna take part, but most of my precious, precious geektime is taken up with modelling/non-hl2 projects...but when there's one I can jump on (next one?) i promise to play it like a good little loper, posting wip shots etc.
problem is, ppl just dont wanna spend time unless there's an incentive - the status & props gained off the ranking isn't really enough, and a prize = $$$ lopers doesnt have.
Maybe organise a 'battle of battles' against another site/forum? interlopers vs whoever, each site runs the battle with the same rules and the top 5 go up against each other for public vote or something. Done friendly-style, naturally.
