Some pretty good maps here, and here's my little opinion run-down:

Kolezan: interesting idea and nice effects, but it's a bit dark

Mr_E: Nice idea, but it has a little bit of clutter

5eyes
: I like the simple idea, but the light is fairly poor and the default sky doesn't do it justice

chromaphobic: very beautiful landscaping and a nice rugged building, but the generator is extremely hard to see.

Muzzi13: Interesting. Those ragdolls look like they've been posed in gmod, which I thought was strictly against the rules. I would focus more on the architectural side rather than the npc side.

These are just my opinions so don't flame me for it. I'm not quite sure who to vote for, although chromaphobic's looks very nice

btw, what happened to Avtraz's map? I liked that one a lot.

Thanks for the advice, but I still want to stress that I'm still new to mapping, I went into this to learn all I could, which gotta say I did learn alot. Lighting is one of those things I didn't have time to get into, havn't had alot of time since school started. But the next map challenge I'm definatly joining, can't wait

no problem -- for a new mapper, it's very nice. Like I said, I do like the idea, and the generator is very visable

i guess i'll do a rundown too

Kolezan: frickin' sweet electricity and IMO the darkness makes it look really good with the surroundings

Mr_E: good idea, very nicely made, and pretty realistic collection of props and textures, nice and cozy. i kinda want to see something sparking or a spotlight somewhere though

5eyes: 'tis nice and simple, but the brushwork looks a little basic. would look a little better if you did something about the sharp corners and the place where the drain hits the wall.

chromaphobic: extremely good looking. everything fits very well. (hard to see the generator but thats ok), grass looks a little flat tho imo.

Muzzi13: cool looking dm map for the lighting and stuff, but really nothing too special outside the npcs (gmod?)

i'm gonna have to go with chromaphobic here. gj everyone

Chromo you're obviously talented but i feel your entry is kinda similar to your skatepark one and trying to find the generator in it is like a game of 'where's wally'...so i'm gonna vote for Kolezan, good work

For Muzzi13:

I see that it's not explicitly said at the beginning of this battle, but I think this rule still sticks:
- Additional mods like bloom mod and garrys's mod CAN'T be used, only hl2, hl2dm and CS:S are allowed

If you didn't use gmod, and just shot those elites yourself, then I'm stupid and you should ignore me.

Thanks. Good points, both. I really didn't have much time to work on it, only a few hours total, so a lot of it was kinda thrown together at the last minute just for the sake of presenting something.

I would have been able to differentiate it more from my previous entry if I'd had more time to work on it, ditto with the generator. I didn't get to the inside of the building at all, so it's an empty buiding with a generator in it, not so interesting. There would have been more, I just ran out of time. :(

Kolezan will get my vote too. Way too dark for my tastes, but very good work nonetheless!

Kolezan ftw. That's extremely interesting to look at, and breaks the mould a bit.

Chromaphobic runs a close second though. Again, I think the lack of "generatoryness" (if you see what i mean) loses you some points, but as a piece of art completely separate from the battle specs, that's gorgeous.

Muzzi13, I dont see much generator there, and what is there doesnt look like the map has exactly been built for around the generator concept. Looks a lot like a particular HL2 level, just with blue lighting. Looks nice...just completely un-map-battley.

5eyes: nice start, but needs to flesh out more. Shots from further back, so we could get more of a contextual view might be nice. But if, as you said, you're newish to mapping, then that's a sterling starting block.

mr_e, a bit cluttered and random, but nice. Is it just me or does this remind anyone of FF7?! I have no ide why. That carpet looks so outta place though lol. With some sriking spot-lighing and a darker feel, and a bit more prominence to the generator, that could have been a winner.

oooh kolezan, i can almost hear the mad scientist cackle as his creature rises from the slab....gets my vote.

btw, i've been far too inactive on the site lately, and plan to participate in the battles. I love what you guys have done in the map battles - such an improvement to the old In The Style Of competition. The map battle results I've seen have all been very high quality - bit pat on the back to everyone who takes part.

Some nice entries, Good ideas behind them but I think alot more detail could have been added to most, they seem pretty plain.

Kolezan's does stick out the most tho, nice job dude.

Thanks guys :D You're saying that it's too dark, my map, while I think it's a little too bright... :-D I guess you guys need to turn up your brightness on you monitors :P Cause the images are all quite lit. No real dark spots.

And as for voting, I would vote for my own, but guess I can't/shouldn't, so I'll vote for chromaphobic's instead. ^^

EDIT: Just checked me images on another computer and they were really dark there. But I turned up the brightness and it looked better.
