Caves are formations caused by erosion of limestone by water. 90% of the time, this creates a sort of tunnel that extends from the water source to one or more exit holes.

Caves are more like tunnels than a simple hole.
If I fire a bullet into the ground, I am making a hole, but not a cave. Likewise if I dig a hole in the sand on a beach: not a cave, but still a hole.

wiki wrote:A cave is a natural underground void large enough for an adult human to enter. Some scientists stipulate that it must be large enough that some portion of it will not receive daylight; however, in popular usage, the term includes smaller spaces like cliff cavities, rock shelters and sea caves. Speleology is the scientific exploration and study of all aspects of caves. The act of exploring a cave for recreation is called 'caving', 'potholing', or occasionally (only in the USA) 'spelunking'.
I cant see if the cave is big enough for humans to enter, though

I would have estimated you older, Terminator, than look for stupid excuses why you didn't win. Your cave didn't look as good as Reeke's (though it IS a close call i admit), just get over it. Have a nice revanche next battle

Frankly, I have no idea why you would think that.
I am simply addressing the issue that has been brought up about what a cave is. Read my posts again, and you will find that you jumped to the wrong conclusion. You "assume", there for you made an ass out of yourself (leave me out of it).

I have no problem with winning or losing, as it was clear that reeke made the best map. I have no problem with reeke winning: he certainly deserves it. If Hemuuuli had not gone to the trouble of making a map, reeke would have had my vote. I just gave it to Hemuuuli for good effort. 8)

I was actually fairly surprised that so many liked my cave at all, as I felt it could have used a lot more work. I was expecting replies along the lines of "too bad you did not have enough time to finish it." But then, the biggest critic is always the artist...

Cur_sed's, while beautiful, i felt had wandered a little to far for the concept...same with rocket_robinhoods - plus it suffers a bit from texture-repetition & stretching problems.

hemuuli & terminators - really good, really faithful and true, and beautiful in their own way - but both a tad bland I think. Part of the challenge here in my opinnion was to take the basic, boring notion of a cave and do something really inventive within that - I feel like you guys have risen admirably to the task of creating a clean, honest, representation of the classic cave idea, but I have to give it to reeke here - not only is it technically well-made and sleek on the eye, it also fulfils my hopes for someone to take the idea to a new level.

So well done everyone, technically excellent all round - but reek's originality and creativity within the bounds of the theme wins it.

aww.... no more tie for third. I was so looking forward to a map-off.... or possibly an dance-off. Actually, just the dance off. With tight polyester shirts and white flares.
Anyway, I'd say I'm totally mapping an actual cave next time, but since the next map battle is unlikely to ask for another cave, I'd probably end up off-topic again. I really just got carried away with my pretty water effects and Militia trees, not much of an excuse, I know, but I had fun!

Reeke if I worked for Valve you would be making levels for Half-Life 3. If and when it comes out that is what the Xen levels shoiuld look like.

Had to vote for reeke. wow  . aliens have WAY cooler dildo caves than we do. While hemuuli and terminator's were good life-like caves, I have to agree with jest; reeke took the idea of a cave and made it unique (not to mention the awesome textures, lighting, and displacements)

And since I just cant help myself,
Cave:
n : an underground enclosure with access from the surface of the ground or from the sea

argue all you want about limestone, that is the dictionary definition of the word 'cave' (crap I got caught up in the derail)
