Map Battle 9: Lake

Postby BaRRaKID on Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:50 am

It's time for a new battle, after some great entries on the last one, we have a similar theme, this time you will have to create a lake scenary.
Here are some images to help getting some inspiration:

Now for a few guidelines:

- Your map must have a lake in it, and the lake has to be the main piece of the map

- You can only post 3 screenshots, and you can only submit one map.

- When posting your screenshots, always explain if they are final or still WIP

- Additional mods like bloom mod and garrys's mod CAN'T be used, only HL2, HL2DM, CS:S, DOD:S and Loast Coast (or any other oficial mod) are allowed

- You can't use any extra software (like photoshop for example) to enhance your screenhosts. Of course usual changes like resizing, croping, or adding your name on the images are allowed

- You can use whatever custom content you want

- The maps are judged according to their quality, so make them look the best you can

- The maps don't need to be playable

- Avoid posting your pictures with big resolutions, since the forum resizes them, and they may loose some quality

The battle ends at the 6th of march, at midnight(24:00h) GMT

So gentleman start your hammers. Good luck everyone

How big does a lake have to be to count as a lake?

wWe, at the USGS Geographic Names Office, in developing the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database, have devised 63 broad categories of feature types with definitions solely to facilitate retrieval of entries with similar characteristics. So, we define lake as “natural body of inland water,” and not necessarily applicable to another’s needs. We have found 54 different generic terms that have characteristics similar to our definition of lake, but all are classified as lake. The only area of general agreement is that perceptibly, a pond is smaller than a lake, but even this is not always true.

so, anything the size of a pond or greater can be a lake in size

Pond usually describes small bodies of water, generally smaller than one would require a boat to cross. Another definition is that a pond is a body of water where even its deepest areas are reached by sunlight or where a human can walk across the entire body of water without being underneath. In some dialects of English, pond normally refers to small artificially created bodies of water.

Though not generally accepted, some regions of the United States define a pond as a body of water with a surface area of less than 10 acres (40,000 m²).

and a pond starts at, what, 3 foot in diameter?

I have always heard the difference between a pond and a lake is that lakes are too deep for waterplants to grow in the middle. A pond may therefore have a patch of reeds in the deepest part, but a lake is devoid of such features.

By that definition, the "pond" dug in my backyard (about 50' long by 30' wide) is a lake.

I say if you could put a boat in it with enough room to move about, call it a lake. If it is too small for that, it is a pond. If it is too shallow and/or choked with weeds, call it a swamp. Good enough. :D

Oh, and I think I will do this one too.

I got a sweet idea for this one... I didn't do the pyhsics one because I couldn't be bothered to make it look pretty, and I didn't do the last one because A) I forgot to go check it, and B) I suck with displacements.

Anyway, nice way to look at environmental destruction I must say.
