dedicated coding subforum

Postby Sauce on Mon May 01, 2006 10:26 am

I think that many would agree interlopers needs a dedicated HL2 coding subforum. Who's with me? :)

I think its a good idea. If someone have some knowledge of coding in the source engine, then share :)

Yeah, I need a full tutorial on compiling with MCVS C++ 6.0, Valve's doesn't help me much.

Now all we need is for Blink to swing by and *bam!* new subforum! :P Maybe if we get more of a response but I don't think many people check out the "general" subforum. C'mon people!

We would certainly have more coders here if there was a forum for it. Perhaps we have many more coders than you suspect they just haven't spoken out because they didn't think there would be any interest here.
We will most likely get more people into coding if we give them the resources to do so. Also, if we do get a coding section, can we have one in the tutorials section of the site also, detailing how to code weapons, vehicles, NPC's, new entities, etc.

EDIT: Dreaz, neither of your sig images work, they haven't been for about 2 months... damn it's been pissing me off.

My suggestion is this.

Get some HL2 coding tutorials. We'll upload if they are of any use. Then if we have enough interest and people to actually use the forum then it might happen. Maybe.

Moving to feedback.

Yeah, thats what I would've suggested except I couldn't get near the site again, my brother had uni assignments to do so yeah... What kind of tuts you guys want first? Downloading MSVC++, Platform SDK, & DirectX should be a good start, setting them up to work together too. Maybe then we could have a couple of tuts on perhaps adding a weapon to the game. Does that require scripting or coding? I'm not sure...

New weapons require coding, and some scripting of the script file for the weapon to show up the right place on the hud etc.

Sound like a good idea. Could help us complete beginners to coding into the right tracks. It would at least help me alot, as I am really really bad at coding. Could probably teach me alot.

There are definitely more than three coders here,
and I'm all for that. The other coder forums have kinda gone dead (HL2Coders + Wavelength) so our only real refuge is VERC.. but I'd rather post here.

coders hide away a lot, the really active places for info are the VERC forum and the hlcoders mail list. I'm not sure we really need one...i think it'd be pretty quiet. plus we'd really need a lot of articles and tutorials to boost it, as Athlete said.

I'm no fan of too-many-subforums...however, i feel that this is more worthy than some of the others. I think culling some of the others (maybe merging Films & Video with Music, scrapping Introduction Time, merging HL2 & HL2 Episodes?) would work well...as few as possible, says I

/runs from those subforum's regulars :D

i think instead of saying theres not any coders here and a coding forum is a bad idea, we should say having a coding fourm would attract coders and add to the interlopers community
