Reference picture part of site

Postby TheRecreator on Tue Jul 04, 2006 5:11 am

I think that Interlopers should have it's own reference picture part. Sort of like the tutorials it would be organized by what each image is. Landscape, etc. Except, with this, it would all be images taken by people of the Interlopers community and such. Not just some random images off of google. I plan to go downtown and stuff to take some urban pictures.

good idea. not everyone has the time and patience for it though.

I love photography, and my town is full of great industry, office, and urban influence. I could get pics if i had my own fricken camera.

No I think it should be like just a section of the site with stickies like, countryside, urban, industrial etc. so to make for easy access.

WHat about something liek that, but add a place on the site that has a tree(thing with all the +'s and -'s?) that you click on each thing and it opens up to reveal more categories. You can click on something broad like country, and go to the corresponding forum page. Or yo ucan click the + next to country, and then select from even more categories like animals, barns, etc.. Each step you'd be able to click and go to the corresponding forum or topic.
I could take some pictures too. 8 megapixel. :O!

I'm sure someone with a bit of php experience could wip up an image upload system.

I'm glad everyone likes my idea. But with an image upload system, it could end up having people abuse the system and upload personal images. Unless the upload system just sends it to be authorized. Maybe a limit to how many people can upload every so often so that a person can't upload a ton and possibly screw something up. And if that is a problem with someone who actually means well and is well known in the community, then maybe special rights can be given. If you all understand what I'm trying to say. Yeah, I mean't as a part of the site, not a forum.

A problem I see with the tutorials section of this site is that with the different sub-sections people are having a hard time finding some stuff, since stuff can possibly go in different catagories. I nice fix could be to have when you click on say the first section "Half-Life 2", it comes up like you have with "Basic Tutorials" and "Advanced Tutorials". but...add a section above those two called "All Tutorials In This Section" and it'll make it easier for those who don't like the two sections.

Also, is this going to cause some sort of bandwidth problems or something? or space will be required for the images? You could possibly use imageshack or such to host the images instead.

I thought upload on imageshack and use [img]xxxx[/img] tags to show the pictures and then use sub divisions for quick easy access.

a system like this could be made as simple or as complicated as one would like

imho, the best way would be to add the images in the mysql database, much like imagehosters do. Its also possible to keep using external image hosters offcourse.
This way you can save a lot of metadata very easily for each image. For instance, you could create keywords, small descriptions, etc for each image. With the use of keywords, each image can offcourse fit in multiple categories: a scary house can fit in "buildings" as wel as in "horror".

as for abuse: i would say:
-only allow registered users to upload pictures
-make a group on the forums that (much like news posters can) can moderate these pictures. They would have to "activate" a picture before it can be used. This way its also possible to say to user "xxxPorn" that he'd better be carefull not to upload pictures like "blondtakinghugedildo.jpg" again, or he'll be banned

seriously, i think this could work very nicely. The question is offcourse, will Blink take the extra traffic?
