Interlopers Podcast

Postby SlappyBag on Mon Jun 11, 2007 3:34 pm

I've talked to Blink about this idea that I've had where-in we produce a podcast for Interlopers. The reasoning behind this is that although there are quite a few gaming podcasts, none of them deal with the development side. I think we should get some core members from Interlopers together and create a podcast to fill in this gap.

Now, most podcasts are viewed as poorly produced and are made by amatures. Now, my father is an English podcaster who has been podcasting every day for the past 2 - 3 years. He is rather famous in the podcasting world, so famous in fact that his fans managed to pay for a two week trip around america [Actually, they did it twice]. You can listen to his pocast at http://www.vobes.com.

I tell you this because he has professional hardware, software and experience that I would very likely be able to have access to. This will allow us to create a professional podcast which should appeal to the modding community.

We will have to create a format, but some ideas for it are:

First of all, each week we will have different members on the show. This allows the whole interlopers community to get envolved and have each show have a different feel. Except for me as I will most likely be producing it.

Open with general news surrounding games and the mod community. This will most likely take up most of the show.

We can then talk about the community, talk about fun things going on at interlopers.net (to promote the website to outside hosts and people who don't browse the forum completly), talk about the current design comps, talk about any progress on maps and the like.

We can even have a section where in people can record questions which we answer on air, about modeling, mapping or just a general gaming question.

Please comment with any ideas and suggestions. Also, if you wish to be part of the podcast please say so, you will need a mic of course and if possible a high quality one. Blink has given his support so if we can create a decent "test" podcast that sounds professional then we may be able to go along with it.

Is the community really that big to need it's own podcast?

There are enough of us lopers, and the mod community is large enough. It would be fun none the less in my opinion and be one extra thing that makes Interlopers stand out above the rest.

I think that we will use all community members that are willing so if you wish to then you can more then likely get on a show.

I want more people to comment really, I wrote a nice large post and get nothing, but thats just because I'm an impatient man and its only just the evening. That being said, I think it will pretty much go down once we get about four people to do the first podcast.

It's been 2 hours. People have work and school and lots of members on these forums are in different time zones.

Give them a chance!

It sounds good, but you HAVE to make it interesting. It's the content that drives these things, not some 14 year old mapper waffling on about why he prefers mapping for HL2DM rather than CS:S.

You could cover generalised game development and Valve stuff too. You can talk about new programs and techniques used to create media in modelling and mapping, new scene renderers available for XSI and MAX. You can have round-table discussions about interesting features of the latest mods. You can talk about obscure subjects and games, different theories on player characterisaton and cinematic technique. (Similar to Jim Rossignol's "The Esoteric Beat" column series on Gamasutra) Or perhaps the finer points of texture creation?

There's a huge range of stuff like you say, but most of all it should be interesting to listen to and the hosts should know what they're talking about in detail. Make it professional sounding!

Sounds good, I'll be sure to tune in if it gets going.

Thank you for your input, it will most likely be a weekly show which will allow for a nice recap of the week.

But I do argee, it must be interesting. The first few shows won't be the best, but it will improve as long as everybody gives opinions.
