I've was just cleaning out my mod work folder and came across this...

Mapping Theory – Dissection of the Classics

The purpose of this tutorial or “guide” is to show the building blocks of what makes a good map by looking at the official Valve map that everybody (near enough) loves, dust2.
I will be focusing on architectural details (brush work) and the layout (gameplay and flow) of each map and how they both affect the popularity of the maps.

What are architectural details?

When I talk about architectural details, I am referring to the shape of the map and what makes the level unique and pleasing to the eyes. Every map is made up of brushes which are moved around 3 axis, the X axis, the Y axis and the Z axis. These brushes can be manipulated and changed to form more interesting shapes instead of simple blocks. Pillars, Arches, Rooftops all count as architectural details.

What is a layout?

A layout is usually drawn out before the map is even started. It shows what goes where, how every area is connected and what each area is supposed to actually be.

Time to look at Dust2!

Do you think I should finish this article? I think it would be helpful to anybody new to mapping.

Ah yes. I've read that before. Maybe I could dissect another popular map like cs_office?

Deffinatly take a look at a map. Those sort of articles are brilliant. Dust2 probably is out of the question due to the past attenion but you should look at some maps.

Heres a suggestion...how about you look at an official map (such as Office) and highlight what makes it great. THEN go onto look at a brilliant map made by some one in the community to highlight how they followed similar techniques or what makes that map so great.

Remind people you don't have to be a proffesional to create something deserving of praise.

If you want I can post it in the Articles section and promote it via there, that's if you want to write it for lopers.

So I've recently decided to start this again with the intent of finishing it. ;) I'm going to start with Dustbowl and if people like it I'll start to write more covering other games, custom maps, and maybe mods too.

Might as well have it hosted here at 'lopers. :)
