Have a thread for each specific award then people post 1 name they want to nominate for the award. After a week or so then the thread is turned into a poll and the names of people nominated go into the poll. To curb the problem of a massive poll, maybe you need 5 nominations or something like that.

Not Necessarily, What about the people that nominated someone but that person didn't make it into the list of nominees, Their vote would then have to be replaced on one of the nominees possibly causing a change in the winner.
