Hyperlinking smilies

Postby jenkins_08 on Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:44 am

Howdy all,

I think this is a "bug" type submission so only really applies to Blink or whoever codes the BBC on this forum...

I was posting a topic recently using hyperlinks within the some smilies (the hammer entity smilies)

When hyperlinking an image there are no problems with syntax.
When hyperlinking a smiley, it will break the smiley because it removes leading and trailing spaces inside {url} and {/url}...

For example;

Say i wanted to link the cheesy grin to the homepage, normally i would of typed;
Code: Select all
:D

Which should look like; Image but explained below; this is not the case...
(above i used the actual image url and the {img} bbc
Code: Select all

By doing this
Code: Select all
:D
the leading and trailing spaces are automatically removed from ":D"

So the smiley then breaks because it needs those spaces... so the code now becomes;
Code: Select all
:D
which looks like :D and this is not desired.

The only way around i know of is to use the {img} tags with the actual smiley URL (bit of messing around to just link a smiley)

Thought i would bring this up, just a bit difficult to explain :P

Peace, Jenkins

To be honest, it's fairly rare that anyone would want to link a smiley, and those that do want to, don't do it often enough to find the (slightly) longer way of achieving what they want annoying.

Or I guess you could put a full stop or something minimal on either side:

Code: Select all
.:D.

.:D.

Oh ok so like in Team Fortress 2, on 2fort you can put the teleporter above the small spawn hole and technically thats a bug, or is it another hidden Valve "feature" xD

Actually its been 5 updates since i discovered that bug and hasn't been touched yet, same with Weapon switch bug and pyro Nerf cannon in the water bug :lol:

Anyway the point of this topic was to make the admins aware that trailing and leading spaces are removed from hyperlinking after entering a forum smiley either by hand or pressing the buttons on the right :P

ad_hominem: i laughed when i read that, i know this is not a big deal i was just surprised to see others knew about it and hadn't said anything :P

Peace

It's intentional to trim whitespace so people don't make massive fuckoff urls with heaps of whitespace in them.

Working as intended. :)
