Round Tunnel with a curve?

Postby opti2000 on Sun May 26, 2013 8:33 pm

Hello i got a little problem.

I want make a curve with this round tunnel but i really dont know how. Its a real pain in the ass everything i tried failed hardly. Does anyone know how to make a curve into a rounded tunnel?

The slats are the main problem here, but for just the wall use a torus. Also it looks like you didn't use an arch for the tunnel.

The tunnel is "handmade".

Well creating a straight line was easy but i also need curves :S

Yeah don't make tunnels by hand, use the arch primitive. And then the torus to do the curve.

Is there any good tutorial?

Its much better to do this with subdivided displacements as shown here. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wik ... placements

Doing it with brushes results in a massive amount of brushes with off-grid vertices.

I used a torus with considerably less brush sides than you might expect. I've done precisely what opti's done for Stroll. It's fairly heavy on the engine but I made a few changes to the level to accommodate it.

I tried it with displacement but nothing noticeable happens.

This is the tunnel i want make round for example.

Now i selected all the faces inside the tunnel and created a displacement and clicked on subdivide but this happens only.

After

Well it get curved just a little bit but not like in the valve wiki :S

All the displacement faces need to share edges (it looks like they do on your picture) and they all have to be selected when you hit subdivide.

Yes like that.

Its going to be a metro tunnel but i just want the tunnel round and also with slant ways. (because a metro tunnel is not always a straight lined way)

The train must be able to fit in the tunnel and drive there then. Thats my intention.

You will not make a slant work without wanting to tear your own arse out through your face. It is literally one of the most pain in the neck things to do with a torus style workflow.

Personally, again, I just used a torus but cut the angles to make a connecting segment, then manually aligned every motherfucking brush on the right vertexes to meet them up. You will need 110% excellent arch/torus practice to make this doable without fucking everything up. Then add in your angled tunnel segment, then copy-paste and pray that the other side comes out in reasonable alignment with the rest of the brushes. Which it inevitably won't, and you cry yourself to sleep.

Do yourself a favour and displace it. Do not do it my way. And learn how to displace in the meantime.

Haha i feel your pain i tried it the whole day with your method :P

But well i finally did it with a displacement and created a nice round slant tunnel way. Thanks all for the tips.

The problem was one side was not properly connected :S
