Could not locate GameData file garrysmod.fgd

According to the official documentation on this, this is a property used to guide compilers. Portal 2 for example has this configured to "portal2.fgd".

Garry's Mod does not have this configured, with the eventual mentioning in each compile log that this could not be located. The .fgd file has to be located in Hammer's directory, which is pretty much the case for all official Valve Source games.

I have no idea what the effect is of having this excluded or included, and the map output does not seem to be indifferent whether or not I manually resolve this situation. I can still use unique Forge Game Data specifications inside Hammer, so the wiki article is right about this not being something for Hammer, but for compilers.

Does anyone know how exactly this is used by compilers? And what happens when it is missing, and when it is not missing?

It should not be important to the compiler at all. .FGD files or Forge Game Data its only to label entities really, so you can place them in the map. Its up to the game whether or not the entities exist, with Garry's Mod you want to use the MP version of SDK and it should not matter where you add the .fgd from, as long as its added I am pretty sure you can place its entities. Also one little off topic note alls the .fgd files you need will be regular single player halflife2.fgd and of course your garrysmod.fgd all the others besides garrys mod does not really use.

This will explain https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/FGD
