--------
old thread

Hey Interlopers!

I have a question about this ( i think it's a screenoverlay or something )
Look at 07:40

How did they do that?
I have been looking for something like this for a while now, and can't figure out how to make this.
any idea?

I would really like to know and use something like this.

You're speaking of the film grain effect as Gordon got close to the radioactive waste? That's probably easily achieved with a screen overlay, though they could have coded their own shader or something for that purpose. If it is a screen overlay, then there's a texture somewhere in the BMS files that you could use.

My best guess is they used an env_screenoverlay with a translucent animated texture, but the best way to find out would be to decompile the map to see for yourself.

I'm not so sure it IS an overlay. Strikes me as more of a shader thing, a la L4Ds film grain.

I have looked at the same map as in 07:40 and there is no trigger there that tells the player to activate the overlay :S and i can't find the texture of it in the effects folder in the BMS mod :S

anyone wants to give a try?

thank you for your help!

Perhaps they use a custom brush entity for the toxic goo to trigger the film grain based on the player's proximity? It's sounding more like a shader to me than a screen overlay. But a screen overlay with an animated texture would probably be just as effective if done right.

You made sure there was no env_screenoverlay anywhere? I've been looking through the texture files and can't find anything that resembles a film grain. I doubt they'd use stock content for that...

I always thought L4D's filmgrain was simply an overlaid animated texture.

To my knowledge, they ended up creating a shader out of it so that it would interact with darkness more effectively - rather than washing out shadows with a slight greyness, it only applies to weakly lit areas of the screen - full brightness wipes it out, while full darkness retains its depth.

you'd have to make a shader from scratch.

A animated transparent texture as a overlay?
if so, whats the px size of the overlay texture? 512x512?

i can only the command for the texture to move in have direction.
How can i make it looks like film grain? like that shuffle animation :)

i hope you understand what im trying to say here :)

Thank you!!
