$ Paid Urgent Request

Postby smashbits on Fri Oct 11, 2013 2:45 pm

Hello,

My name is Rick Jones. I am the creator of the Smash Champ series on Machinima.

I have an urgent request that I am willing to pay for. I need somebody who can export all of the “Summoner’s Rift” level models from League of Legends for the Source Engine and then recreate the entirety of Summoner’s Rift in Hammer for use in SFM. If you are interested in this gig please let me know asap as finding somebody who can do this is my main priority today.

Not really interested in doing the work but for my own amusement I'll try to think of the means involved.

I guess the first method I'd attempt would be to use DXRipper, look at what is output, try to find an optimal position to take the rip at and write a script in max to remove the perspective errors assuming LoL doesn't use an orthographic view.

This also assumes that LoL has its own file type for models and textures that isn't something you can import straight into a program.

I actually have no clue what most of that means. I probably should have had my 3D animator post this because he knows more about it. If you have any questions about the scope of work let me know and I will get you an answer.

Also, please let me know your quote if you are interested in this project.

A few years back, it was pretty easy to import character models from League in to 3DS Max. Riot used a zip folder that contained all the bulk assets and the file encryption was relatively basic. But the file structuring and encryption in the game files as changed drastically since then because people were able to take official champion skins and replace their default skins with the alternative skins without having to pay for them. The catch was that only you saw your character's skin and everyone else saw it as the default skin. Kind of like client-side reskins for Counter-Strike. On top of that, I imagine they switched to a better rigging system at some point down the road for better character animations. This might have also affected the file types that they use. But then again, you want props, so it could be entirely different in that case.

I want to say it's still possible to get models from the game in to a program like 3DS Max, but I haven't looked in to that in ages. I think people still make custom skins these days but I'm not sure if Riot appreciates it since skins are what makes them money; believe it or not.

I believe people are still making custom skins as well with the same catch. The encryption concept makes since. I wonder if somebody ripped "Summoner's Rift" back before there was much encryption and posted all the pieces somewhere waiting to be put back together by somebody who knows how. :-)

Jman, you hint that you may know how to do this but you are not interested in doing it. How much cash would magically interest you? :-)

I've seen someone post screens here with ported tower models, so the ported models already exist somewhere. I would be surprised if you couldn't find the models on facepunch or some related Garry's Mod forum. Have a look there.

I would just check facepunch since they seem to have a community entirely dedicated to model ports, or whatever that gmod related site is that contains custom content.

The method I suggested only works if LoL uses direct X.

That is definitely a step in the right direction. It sounds like this project is going to require a team of people.

As far as the scope of work, if this requires multiple people – so be it. I am willing to pay whoever and whatever to get this done ASAP!

What’s the price?

^^in terms of legal reasons, i'd avoid any kind of payment for a job that includes ripping content from commercial games.

It's not exactly legal to do it without payment but it surely is illegal to take money for it or make money with the ripped content in any kind or fashion.

While most companies don't act against ppl who take their content/IP for their personal enjoyment (fair use), they surely would do if they see you or anyone else earning money with it.

Kraid,

Actually, you have nothing to worry about. I have been working for two years in the professional video game entertainment industry. There are so many legal things I could explain right now but I think it would be a waste of my time. From my experience talking with scared model rippers who know little about the law because they are not in the professional industry, nothing I say will be believed. I have gotten into too many arguments with people who don’t know what they are talking about and make no effort to research it for themselves. Usually they just keep repeating the same made up legal stuff they hear over and over from other model rippers.

To make this short just in case you are seriously considering this and don’t fit that description.

(1) Machinima and Riot have a working relationship with defined rules of conduct and this fits within the rules, (2) you will not be credited if you do not want to be - so nobody will know about this, (3) Machinima would be the party in any lawsuit, not you – but there will never be a lawsuit because Riot wants stuff like this to be made and have even talked with us about it (are you familiar with Bungie's response to Red Vs Blue?).

So . . . what’s the price? . . . or can nobody do this?

League does in fact use DirectX. I've used SweetFX with the game, which only works for DirectX games.

I remember that post as well. We kind of scared the guy off since we don't really support "pimping" model ports here, and we directed him to Facepunch for that kind of stuff. I used to hang out around the modeling section of Facepunch all the time and I don't think I ever saw any packs full of all the League map props.

Ok sure thing buddy. I am interested in hearing you explain the legalities of this concisely, since pretty much from my own personal experiences, what you're saying is a load of bull. You're being intentionally vague to sidestep the issues of offering a monetary reward for stolen content, which you own no rights to. It's intellectual property. I can understand why you won't be believed by "scared model rippers".

Hollow,

As I mentioned before; I am no longer interested in arguing about it because debating this is probably a waste of time. Besides, I would rather not offend anybody with arguments. If you can complete the tasks I need done, I might be more interested in explaining the legal aspects involved. If you cannot; then what’s the point?
