VVIS runs my core temp to over 70C

Any aspects of level design for the Source engine.

VVIS runs my core temp to over 70C

Postby Dementei on Mon Nov 04, 2013 6:27 am

Checking CoreTemp I get around 70C when vvis.exe is compiling but it drops down back to 50 after a few minutes and even down to 40, before I reverted my overclock it was going to 85 and actually my PC crashed for safety. I have an AMD 8350 @4.8Ghz with 1.5v and my normal temperatures are 20s-30s. Running BF4 I get max 45C. I also have these tools by reepblue, not sure if something is faulty with them. My cooler is a Corsair H55.

So is this just my hardware acting up or is there something actually wrong with the build programs?
I've checked and it runs all 8 cores on 100% driving it up to that temp, but then after several minutes it will use only 4 and drops usage and temp so I don't really know wtf. There's a way to set the affinity automatically when you build the map but I forget, anyone know how?

On a side note, vrad will use 100% of all 8 cores like vvis does except it stays in a good range around 45C.

You need to cool your PC better. But it using 100% of all 8 cores is normal. It could take days otherwise.

45 is too much already. I'm afraid it's all about the cooling.

I would do a remount of that H55 and then you should read this thread here http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id- ... -temp.html

Hmmm guess I'm gonna have to try a remount then with some nice arctic silver. These temps started after I unparked my cores, but I reverted that and set it to normal. Something might've happened during that time, if only BF4 actually performed right I wouldn't have tried unparking :smt021

It's still odd to me that vrad will run 8 cores at 100% and still be much lower temp than vvis, guess it's just the different calculations going on.

Edit:

Just set clock speeds to 4.4Ghz down from 4.8Ghz and lowered the VCore to 1.4v down from 1.5v and here is the result when compiling vvis now:

Never went over 42C even after the map was done compiling.
I will probably just stick to 4.5 or 4.6Ghz and leave it at that.

The 0.4 GHz isn't worth the heat, glad you realise that.

He doesn't live in Satan's asshole. Here we sadly have normal temperatures outside like -40C.

I live in a finished basement with concrete floor so it keeps pretty cool especially with that entry level watercooler. Also I fixed my BF4 stutters if anyone else was having problems :P

Your CPU isn't 10c when idle, well not unless the room is 10c ambient. Also something to note, your CPU doesn't have an on die thermometer. The temperatures that gets reported are the best estimates and has to taken with a grain of salt.
