HenPortGaming - Hammer Tutorials

Postby Hennius on Tue Nov 05, 2013 7:31 pm

Hello everyone, My name is Laurence but i go by the alias "Hennius".
I have an absolute passion for the Hammer editor and creating very effective and interesting maps, my intention now is after almost 9 years of practise with the original editor, i am now making very in-depth tutorial videos for the community to take advantage of.

My YouTube channel is labelled : HenPortGaming
The link is : External link to "HenPortGaming"

Please give me any suggestions for tutorial videos to make, bare in mind i am taking these stages as they come so if you do make a suggestion, it may not be created STRAIGHT away but i will do my best to upload a video for it asap :)

I will be posting all new content as it comes on this forum.

Not had a good look yet, it's just that carving is generally accepted as the worst feature ever in hammer.

I don't tend to use it that often as i prefer more uniform shapes and rely on pre-made models to make details for me. Regardless to the carving :P Hey there! sorry i didn't actually say hi in my original reply.

Reviewing the current videos which i have posted on HPG. I am going to hold off for the next 2-3 days or so untill i get a better microphone to reduce some of the noise being produced. Please feel free to ask for a tutorial video and i will add it to my list of things to do :)

The thing is, the source sdk is an established tool set. There's plenty of these types of tutorials around.

Maybe try something a little more niche/advanced for next set?
Can't think of anything off of the top of my head, but something like detailing or the importance of vertical movement/height (Flat maps are blergh)

Basically, something that'll be a bit more difficult to find elsewhere.

That was my worry with the ammount of tutorials already out there...
Doesn't come as a surpise that im trying to assist in an already exhausted sector.
I have already got some advanced tutorials lined up, along the idea of optimisation realism, dynamic ambient effects etc. The only reason im starting the channel with these sort of mundane videos is because its includes "Every" aspect of the hammer editor, even small tools and knowledge stuff.

I like your mention on height in maps because looking at the editor, most times they do end up working on a flat plane so it does make sense that aiming upwards or even "downwards(underground)" would mix things up abit, especially for games like csgo or l4d.

Z-mapping and applying real world geometry would be interesting. Not even tutorials per-se but just discussion on the topic. Ooh, maybe even the discussion of going off the grid, not breaking the Source but avoiding the general boxiness and 90 degree angles.

Look at what Daz does http://www.youtube.com/user/darrenweekes

Well you see alot of comparisons when developers show case work on a game and especially new graphical technologies with a real life photo vs a recreation of that scene using their own 3D tools. I would love to be able to apply that in a Hammer editing scenario and not be tied and restricted to a flat plane. I recon de_dust would be revolutionary once more if they could slant it on a desert hill side.

This far late into Source's lifetime, I would suggest completely rerouting that passion to an engine that is not Source.

I get that, however it's more of a personal database of tutorials. Considering now you have the original Hammer editor recently loaded onto the Steam tool section for Half life 1 and thats much older. My passion doesn't stretch just to the source engine, i tend to play around with the cryengine as well as unreal engine. Ill get some vids out for those ones too because peeps still use them everyday.
