Hammer acts strange sometimes

Postby plagueofburia on Fri Apr 18, 2014 9:39 pm

I am using Hammer orange box version and for some reason I get some strange polygons appearing, has this happened to any one before?

If I uncheck props/point entities in vis groups the polygons go away. Does any one know why this happens?

This could be numerous things. Glitching like this in a 3D render scene (Even in hammer) can be caused by the VRAM on the GPU been excessively hot leading to write errors (Removing props eases the GPU loading and reducing heat), System RAM could be damaged or overheating aswell.
Or it could be as simple as your GPU drivers where somehow corrupted or you've recently updated them.

This used to happen to me in some maps while not in others. It isn´t related to your GPU at all, so don´t worry. I can tell because it is tied to some maps only, which means is a simple bug in the renderer that some constructions trigger. There´s another bug many people must have ran into, that is that in some parts of the map texture becomes all glitchy, like if they all were alligned perpendicular to face. It is caused by some shaders in models, specifically eyeballs and refractive models. When one of these models is on screen in the 3d view brush textures glitch.

Aus_Karlos, thanks, I have used hammer for a some time and I have never seen that before. It only started recently on that map, I have loaded Valve maps from HL2 into hammer at the same time and these polygons do not appear. It is not like that in their maps. I have an old Radeon 5890 I would have though that GPU would work well with hammer orange box.

Gambini, thanks, that is good news it is not related to the GPU.
That is interesting that a model can affect the textures of a world brush, I wonder what causes hammer to do that?

I personally thought this issue was because that the map was so huge that hammer was breaking down.

it was saying help, no more brushes please. : )

Some of the Stroll maps I'm working on have insane amounts of brushes in very small areas owing to my shitty optimisation and laziness in converting things to propper. When I look to the global north in those areas (0, 0, 0) it tends to do exactly as the above, but with 9000% more spazziness. It's pretty normal.

I'm inclined to say it's due to certain textures and models rather than brushwork, but as I'm not actively looking for the glitch until it happens, I can't be sure.

I know it's a 3 day bump, but peace of mind y'know.
