Any aspects of level design for the Source engine.

light glows

I'm trying to figure out how to do light glows (or light beams, whatever you want to call them). I saw one on a DoD Source screenshot and now I want to make them myself.

Something similar to this (let's see if I can remember BB code).

This is the closest I could figure out how to get it. All I did is take a brush, textured it with cs_italy/culighta, and tweaked with the func_brush stuff to make a nonsolid object and translucent. That doesn't really look as good as the screen shot I saw from DoD (I don't really know where to find that specific shot, though). When I walk into mine, it disappears, and I know if I hollow it, then it'll just look ugly. So, I dunno.

*Ok, I actually did find the DoD screen shot, so here it is:

well on the old hammer you used a func_illusionary to do that.. the texture used had a degradé the ended in black.. then you haded the render mod as adictive wich would make the black part invisible creating that light shading effect i think that maybe something similar to that on the new hammer

Im not sure about gettin it to stop dissapearing, but to make it more realistic add dust motes to the lit area. There is a tut for it on our tutorial page.

In the done of de_dust it has cast light beams. And I'll be buggered if those beams were made with a brushes. I've an idea of how they were made, but cba to look. Having to much fun with displacement maps.

Aye, probably. I was hoping it to be some fancy volumetric light entity similar to dust motes. I am dissapointed.

I get back from work later, i will try and figure it out :)

I researched the dod shot and it gives a hammer view and there is a no draw brush there, but i think thats for the dust motes. I will have to find out.
