What do you do when something compiles?

Postby LordDz on Sun Jun 21, 2009 3:25 am

Couldn't find an offtopic subforum, so.. I guess this one will do.
What do you do when a map/movie compiles/renders?
I use spotify and listen to music and just freakout... ^^

Also, what's with the l4d engine.. I mean, something that took 5-10 min for me takes about 1 min on it.. Like on this map I've made recently (pretty big), "Warning, HDR CAN DOUBLE COMPILE TIME". And it only took 47 seconds.

And yes, I'm a bit tired/hyper when I wrote this.

I normally just actually take the time out to chat with all the people talking to me on X-Fire, Steam, AIM/YIM/MSN. Since normally when I'm working I'm generally quiet - so that's my time to respond back.

My computer is useless when compiling so I either go on xbox or make something to eat.

That's because your maps don't span the entire grid and have hundreds of displacements!

I generally do thinks like...
-get a snack
-stare
-walk around the room
-stretch
-talk to others around me
-stare
-go onto the Youtube
-continue looking for errors in my previous compile
-rant on about the current 'L4D2 boycott' and how gamers will never in a million years be able to discipline themselves into not buying a game they want even if they are "hard-core 'cotters of the people"
-go onto Interlopers
-stare
-Watch the television

-eat
-stare at the screen
-leave my house (sometimes)
-find something to do
-come back and stare some more
-zone out while staring
-still zone out while not realizing its done compiling
eather-
1.play the map
2.loose the mood to play the map or think of something to add on to it so i never end up playing it.

Seriously, what's up with L4D compiler.. It's sick in speed (it's a good thing).

Well I work on smaller maps, for the most part, so I just watch the various programs work their magic, listen to music, or go shove food in my face ;)

Yeah, no kidding...

Though My machine has a quad core processor and 8 GB of RAM I would be pissed if it did not compile quickly. To be honest though I normally compile while I sleep.

A better question is what do you do while you nav_generate? That takes longer for me then the map compile...
