The compiler doesn't lock me up at all. I sometimes play games while compiling but most of the time I just read the forums.

I have task manager up on the processes screen before I start the compile and as soon as vrad starts, I change the affinity so at least one of the processors are unchecked (quad core) That way my computer isn't a freakish mess and I can still do somewhat intensive stuff on it.

Makes vrad take a little longer but at least i'm not wasting time staring at the ceiling.

Mostly I made programmer art levels. Which is odd because I am a artist pretending to be a programmer who is making programmer art. Anyway it doesn't take long to compile my amazing(ly rubbish) levels so I normally just take a sip of drink or dance for no apparent reason.

You should all use VBCT. It doesn't lag me up whatsoever.

I can't compile large maps with the VBCT, it gives me bollocks errors.

Which is a shame because it's great to be able to continue working on something while it compiles. I think I'll try to download it again.

Do you have a link of where to download it at?

Enjoy. Made by our very own Quicksilver from SPUF.

I've tried that before but with the Valve compiler it's almost impossible because my computer is extremely slow, might be able to now with this VBCT though.

Rather than change the affinity, you could just change the process priority to below normal. That way it uses every ounce of available computing power that you aren't using for something else. On the other hand, if you want the compile to horde every drop of power to slightly improve compile time, set the priority to above normal. Granted your computer will be useless until it's done (except for task manager which runs in high priority, so you could always change it if you want). Oooorrrrrr, you could leave it at normal priority but set the other thing that you're working on to above normal, so compiling will not be bogged down by stupid shit like icons drawing on your desktop, but your boosted app will still function well. For that matter, it's default behavior for the thread scheduler to assign a slightly higher priority to the active application. Enough about that...

Cool.

I figured the title would include something like compiling mod code... which I usually sit and stare, cause it takes less than a minute. Sometimes I sing along to Pandora, or just hum the bass line (even while I program sometimes).

Well, I guess when that rare occasion I am compiling mod code comes, I just sit and watch the progress hoping that I don't get any errors.

When I am rendering an image, I usually browse the web, and move the rendering window on my second screen. Sometimes I do the same with map compiling, when it takes a very long time. I just move Hammer to my 2nd screen, make it half the screen size, and below it open Process Lasso so if my VVIS is obviously failing, I can turn it off and go around optimizing.

If I simpy minimize Hammer while compiling, there's no force in the universe to maximizd it agian beore it finishes compiling. Which may be never if VVIS is failing. And I will never know too, because I can't see the compiling progress.

When compiling mod code I normally browse lopers or try to guess the numbers of errors that will come up (1132 is my max so far also proves that you should edit the base-class too much).

I look at it... :)
Then rage when it creates all the errors that doesn't seem like a thing to create an error about..
