Trine

So I caught this game on Steam, and I watched the trailer. The game looked REALLY cool form the trailer because of the physics-based gameplay and the awesome graphics.

As you can see, it's a 3D side-scroller (2.5D) game in which you play as 3 heroes (wizard, thief, warrior) who you can swap between on the fly. Each hero is obviously unique in their abilities, which you can upgrade. You gain experience by collecting vats of green potion, or by killing enemies (not all give you experience). Each is worth 1 xp, and you must collect 50 to level up. The vats are either hidden out of the way, or cleverly so that you will easily over-look them. You can also find hidden treasure chests (some are in plain site for the sake of progression) to collect trinkets and other such artifacts that give your characters benefits. You can swap them between characters at any time and have as many on each as you want.

It's not an incredibly long game. It provides probably about 5-7 hours of gameplay your first time through, but it has a Cooperative mode, which is unfortunately restricted to a single computer. You must have an additional gamepad for the other player. The game is out on Steam and the Playstation Network for 20 USD/20 EUR. Sorry 360 folks, it's not out on 360, but the developers are considering it.

I wondered about the possibilities of a level designer for it, but I was disappointed to find out that one did not exist publicly. However, there have been numerous requests for it to happen and the developers are thinking about releasing one. In my opinion they need to release it on top of patching the game to support online cooperative. They should give the game room for an actual online community, sort of like Little Big Planet. User-created levels that can be distributed amongst the community.

Anyway, I just thought I would share this with you, along with my thoughts on it. :D

It is fun in the first few chapters, then it gets boring because it's rinse repeat and nothing new gets added.
Fun for a good hour, and I still haven't finished playing yet (last level).

Last level is a pain in the ass, but I eventually got it. :D

It does have some repetition, but I found the whole thing to be real fun, and the levels are pretty unique throughout the game, which really kept me on it.

Zero Punctuation was completely right.

Thank God I didn't pay for it myself.

I played this from start till end in one night with a friend of mine. And I most certainly will again in the near future!

The soundtrack is so good. And the backgrounds are stunning! With the waterfalls, rainbows and the lava streams.

Well worth my 4 pounds.

If you check the Trine Steam forums almost every thread has a developer comment. Even be it a mere smiley, they really give me the feeling they care and I will be keeping my eye out for any new games they will create

It's a nice run, great artistic design and execution. Rather short, but I guess that it if were any longer it would start getting annoying. I liked it, it was like reading a short fantasy story with beautiful descriptions, kind of charming, and the gameplay was nice too.

Trine is best played with two friends alongside you. Alone it is a lot easier since you control all of the characters by yourself and for that reason make less mistakes, but it is more fun when played with friends. It is refreshing to see some more games developed in Finland, since the game industry here is very small, though it is growing all the time. The graphics are fairly nice and gameplay features are perfect for a side scrolling adventure. I bought the game from playstation store for 10 euros and it was worth all of it.

Wow, old topic.

Well, the main thing that I really liked about this game was the classical fantasy setting and story line. I love that kind of thing.
