Modern Warfare 2 - No Dedicated Servers?

I love this news I mean seriously I brought mw on the pc and was totally disappointed with the multiplayer I couldn't find a server in which someone had decided to allow 50-60 people to join. This lead to most annoying games and eventually I ended up buying it on the xbox and loved it. I can kinda see the point of dedicated servers but most of the time people just fuck up the game with their shitty server side modifications that ruin the game for me. I just want to play the game I brought I don't want to play some mod that a 5 year made were we jump 1000 feet in the air and shoot rockets. Also I know most of you are pro dedicated server so it will properly cause massive flames posting this but I seriously just want the devs to know that I agree with them totally on this move.

100% agree. I don't do much multiplayer gaming, but when I have, I've run into exactly the problems described above.

The nice thing about that is all the 5-year-olds hang around the jumpy mod servers while everyone else congregates in normal servers.

When UT2004 came out me and my friends roamed the servers and we kicked major ass, we did all sorts of insane stunts and we barely lived to tell the tale. I remember how we used to perform acroabtics combined with vehicles, jumping off a jet fighter up in the air, just to get picked up by one of our friends with a manta, barely making it! man those were the times. breakthrouh moves! i remember jumping off a wall, flipping in the air and shooting the flac right through someone's head, under the red sky as scorpion buggies would jump and spin all over the place... ahhh, they don't make 'em like that no more.

but seriously now, every now and again it's great to mess around with the server and do some funny things. having the same old routine every time isn't doing any good for the game.

No more leaning, 9v9 is the max size of games allowed, no dedicated server support, no access to the console, no custom maps, no ability to make custom maps, you aren't allowed to turn off any of the effects (IW wants you to play the game "How they intended it", all that atop of IW thinking it would be really funny to make an official PR Video entitled "FAGS". Modern Warfare 2 is officially dead to me.

They want to combat piracy by completely alienating the PC crowd? Fine, they don't get any of my money. Can't wait to hear them whine about how bad PC sales will be this time, I bet it'll be pirates again and not IW dropping the ball again.

Reading some of the comments there, you'd think IW was under attack by a bunch of children with a wish to be martyrs.

1 - PC gaming is not superior to console gaming, and vice versa. Nobody really gives a shit; you play STALKER on PC and MW2 on console.

2 - The 'I'm not buying it' is petty and just plain odd. Why not? Because you won't get dedicated servers? That's not going to make much of a difference, seeing as the consoles get along fine without them. What's more, you're going to miss out on a pretty good looking game, along with the often ignored Spec Ops, and then most likely pirate it. Well done to you.

3 - The digi distributors have shot themselves in the foot; bye bye profit.

4 - I agree that a lot of the stuff IW have pulled, i.e. no modding whatsoever, is a little arseholey, but that's not really all that unusual. I remember the bad old days where you had no mapping engine or modability - we've become so used to having control over our experience with stuff like Source that when the leash is yanked back we bite the hand holding it. Logical really, but I just thought I'd put that in context.

/rant. In any case, as I said, I'm getting it on console, but I really don't see what all the fuss is about; just play the damn game.

Host advantage and no administrative mods (opposed to ones that directly effect gameplay)

I can kinda see where they're coming from with the whole "but nobody even mods our game" thing, but their solution seems a little too radical for my taste. Without making a big fuss about it, I think I'm going to cancel my pre-order . Which is a shame I really really enjoyed CoD4's multiplayer. I'll probably end up buying the game, even shortly after release, but I need to see how fucked multiplayer is. (I had to stop playing Gears of War because of host advantage and match-making, and that's an otherwise competition friendly game)

It seems like IW is taking the extreme opposite point of view on piracy than Valve is. Valve says pirates are under-served customers, IW says "Fuck your PC's you'll now have all the 'benefits' of playing on a console"

I think host advantage will be much less of a problem with 9v9 the reason it was so apparent in gears was that it was all based around small teams and therefore 1 persona having an advantage truly affected the game. Although I guess we will have to wait and see.

sure, it might not be as apparent as in gears of war, But it's still a HUGE issue (assuming they don't have something to prevent it in mw2). When competing for top of the board in DM, it's kinda gay to be killed by someone who you can't even see.

so yeah, that guy may not sway the match, but he'll definitely ruin my game.

oh yeah, and Bad company 2 looks good.
