half-life was so much better than halflife 2

Postby Kvackabill on Sun Nov 08, 2009 11:19 am

Little late for whiners.. but I keep asking myself how they could totally abandon the black mesa setting? It was just too awesome! I mean to me city 17 and it's textures are just bland and boring and not as near as interesting and atmospheric as black mesa.
And there's just something about Half-Life 1 graphics that still makes it appealing to this day.. halflife 2 hasn't got the same immersion.
My hope is that they bring it back in ep 3...

1) Returning to or continuing with Black Mesa within the HL2 storyline would be creative death, as Gabe said himself. + They nuked it at the end, unless Gordon suddenly mutates into a cockroach he won't be able to survive very long.
2) I do however have to agree with you on your second point. I think because of the gritty, pixelated, detail lacking textures in HL1, your brain fills in the details. Sorta like what L4D does with the filmgrain to suggest detail where there isn't.

Bearing in mind HL2 was originally released in 2004, it's aged pretty damn well. The graphics at the time, and indeed still are, good. Personally I feel all old games have better gameplay, HL included, but HL2 is still superior in my opinion simply because it's so much more expansive.

Or, it's just because HL1 was the first game to do things the way it did. By the time HL2 rolled round everyone had ripped off several techniques that make HL2 less of an impact.

Regardless, you can't say HL2 had less immersion. The character voice acting and animations were immense for 2004.

You need to judge games based around what was happening then, not what is happening now.

Yeah sure but when you see it in it's entirety it isn't as immerse, I've always thought the animations and voice acting looked abit strained in HL2.. but people see things differently. I'm not saying HL2 looks worse, Episode 2 looked great, it's just that HL "feels" better..

I still play hl1 sometimes, and I still hate the Xen part of the end of the game.

I enjoy playing hl2 more, but I give hl1 more credit for being an innovative game. Its the roots.

Im playing through opposing force again :P
I had totally forgot there was the ceiling-hanger grapple thing.
Theres a ton of aliens in opposing force that are not in the rest of the series.

i think we should remember what we felt first when we saw hl1 and hl2. i mean now, while we have splitted this game up into thousands o pieces and analyzed it and putted it together to a mod, its not that "magic" to us anymore as it was before.

when i remember myself playing hl1 for the first time(well, i actually watched my brother playing it^^), i just had the feeling i was watching some kind of interactive movie and the action and everything overwhelmed me.

with hl2 the awesome feelings changed, but it was still awesome! i guess you all feel the same with hl2, otherwise you would be modding hl1 or you were not here.

but what am i trying to tell you, i need a poet to tell you what ive exactly felt...
Enjoy your Kartoffelsuppe!

I fully disagree. Half life 2 was more immersive, better atmosphere, and generally a better game than half life 1.

I just don't like threads like these... saying one thing is better than the other, when those two things are so separate.
For me, HL1 and HL2 are so different, one based on story, the other on action, I can't really compare the two and really say one is better than the other. I really liked hl1, had lots of action, but the only storyline was more or less, get here, do this, no real reason except escape. Hl2s action was ok, good at times, and non-existent at others, but the technology for story telling had greatly increased, it is there where you discover just what happened at Black Mesa, where you are, and why.

Oh, also, Kvackabill, Black Mesa source is coming out this year so, W00T!

Both were absolutely fantastic games. Revolutionary in some cases. However, HL2 is more up-to-date, has superior graphics (compared to HL1), and what I think is better gameplay. Half Life 2 is also much more expansive, and this site proves you can do almost anything with its engine. However, I will be getting Black Mesa: Source when it comes out. It may improve on Half Life's original faults.

bullshit

and the original Half-Life was a way better game than Half-Life 2 because it had a sense of closure. And viewing the same apocalypse from the eyes of two other people (Opposing Force and Blue Shift) cemented the idea of Half-Life 1 as the best game ever for me.

With Half-Life 2, I always feel like Valve is cutting us off right when things get interesting. And I think we may never see another Valve game where you play as Barney or as Shepard, which is very, VERY tragic in theory.

EDIT: You know, Dylan, I think I owe you an apology for saying "bullshit" because I just saw their updated website. WTF, maybe they actually will release this year. That would be the best fucking news of the current century. I hope Valve picks these guys up and ports BM:S to the X-Box, just for the sake of the thousands of kids who have never played Half-Life 1.

Something like this is obviously an opinionated argument.

Honestly, it should just be based on which game was more of an experience to play. I love both games equally, as they both gave me an unforgettable experience which only a few other games could possibly match (Metroid Prime).

Trying to see what game is better based on "gameplay and graphics" is a weak argument when real games are designed to provide people with a unique and fun experience (and in some cases like Half-Life or Mass Effect, a good story). Granted that both graphics and gameplay can be crucial elements to creating this experience, but when it comes down to it, all that really matters is if you enjoyed and appreciated game A more than game B.

In my opinion, HL 2 is still the best story-fps out there. I also love the bits in Water-Hazard where you can just stop, stand still and listen to the great ambient sounds... pure 300 meters of no enemies. They should do that more often.
