L4D2 nitpicking

Postby AverageJoe on Tue Nov 17, 2009 10:06 pm

Oh you knew this was gonna happen anyway. :P

First: Even with 2gb of dram I still get page file loading lag spikes every three to five minutes with my flashlight on, turn it off and it runs like a dream. This is with minimum settings possible too!
It just seems like it's a bit ridiculous for that to be happening. It's really weird because the demo didn't do this at all.

Second: That roller coaster is absolutely impossible in single player because the robits are terrible. They cant even get on the coaster, and what's more is that if they do, for some damn reason they spread so far out everybody gets picked off by SI before I even make it to the first rest stop area with the ammo.

Other than those two show stopping glitches for me it's a winner.

Does this deserve it's own thread?

Anyway I have 1 gig of RAM and didn't get pagefile errors on the demo. The demo was just a port of the 360's demo though which is why it had a lot of problems to sort out. Maybe that's why it didn't have pagefile errors because it was made to use less RAM on the 360.

I actually found the demo to run better than the full game does, strangely.

My friend has a GTX 285 or whatever, 4GB DDR2 RAM a Q6600 Intel processor, so really, really shouldn't have a problem running it, yet everytime a tank or other special infected pops his head up, he gets lag spikes... typical when you're on the last leg to the safe house and a hunter jumps you :|

There's a way to alter your virtual page file's maximum storage.

Start->RMB Computer->Settings->Advanced Tab-> Presentation-> Advanced-> Virtual Memory.

If you have multiple partitions like C - D - E, and you installed the OS on C just add the minimum and maximum amount there.
This is an example don't do the same if you don't have 4GB Memory.
C: Minimum Space: 2GB
Maximum Space: 4GB
D: None.

Reason my D has none is because there's only Files there, Data it doesn't need a page file. This usualy makes your computer slower and has no meaning - also causes things like those lag spikes in both OS and Games.

Just try this out and see if it helps anything.

I've got a 8800GS 300mb, 4GB DDR2, Q6600 aswel and the game runs smoothly.

It's not the game it's probably something that's messed up in the OS.

Remember: If you have 1GB just add to the minimum 1GB, and 2GB in Max. I'm not sure why but my schools book says to add the double amount of GB in the max and minimum... but I tried that and didn't make a difference, but try it anyway! You never know.

AMD Athlon II X2 250 Processor (3,0 GHz)
4GB RAM
ARI Radeon HD 470

No lag spikes, I play on maxed settings except for textures and AA.

Also.. Bots fucking suck, but I didn't have any major problems by the roller coaster.

My only gripe was actually server side. My friend has a server and was seemingly unable to set a password. It took 30 minutes of booting people out of the server before I was actually able to join because it kept filling up.

Pay attention to the dialogue/safe room graffiti, they keep talking about the sugar mill being overrun with witches.
Its an intentional witch area, theres an achievement for not disturbing em iirc.

Whenever I'm fighting a tank, I lag every god damn time I shoot it. I don't know wtf is causing it. Maybe fucked up particle systems?

Also, yes, there does seem to be an issue with the dynamic shadows when your flashlight is turned on. I ran l4d with x8 MSAA, and x16 AF and I RARELY got lag from the shadows.

A bigger nitpick I have is the maps in versus. The skybox is so fucking low and more than half the roofs are inaccessible, so hunters are fucking retardedly difficult to be now. I loved getting those epic high pounces, but Valve up and yanked that fun right out of the game. It's like they made the hunter for giving all the other infected a distraction, which is a really shitty purpose. I rarely see any good hunter moves.

However, all the new infected are great, especially the charger. That thing is beyond fun. My whole team got rolled at the very beginning of The Parish on the dock. It charged in to us when we were clustered up, and sent 3 of us flying in to the water while pummeling the last one to death. VERY funny.

lag?
oh yeah, i remember those days... feel sorry for you guys. (lol)

anyways, I have no real gripes with the game except two things:
1.Bots are dumb.
2.Ellis has excellent stories, which the other survivors always interrupt.
