Day 8, a Half-Life based graduation film!

Postby -<Crazymapper>- on Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:59 pm

A while back I posted something silly about me making a movie in the source engine... or something...
That however didn't really work out all that well...

So...
Together with a friend of mine we started to work on something else, yet still Half-Life themed:

This is what we've been working on for the past 5 months. It costed us about €250,- and was shot in 2 full days in Duisburg, Germany.

Please do let us know what you think!:D

Wow, this was pretty awesome, great effects for your budget. The acting is something mediocre at best and you can really notice that English is not your first language, but it wasn't too hard to understand. Nice job anyway!

Hmm one thing i always notice in most amateur video, it lacks that film look/framerate? and looks like camcorder.

Really nice though.

@korge, most of the effect you mention you only get when recording on 35mm tape. We (well, I) filmed with a JVC HD201 camera. That beauty certainly aint cheap or anywhere near a camcorder. :)

Agreed with Phott. Nice dutch accents. :-D

I like it. :smt023

But please tell me, which study on which school did you follow?

I think he mainly means that the movement of the camera isn't like in hollywood movies. Since most likely you've filmed this with either a camera on your shoulder or in your hands.

Nice work tho. :D

ROC-Rijnijssel in Arnhem ;) But lets just say the school wasn't realy involved in teaching us all of the stuff we did in our film... Most of the stuff such as the motion tracking etc. we had to figure out ourselves.

Since it was for your graduation, I think it's somewhat understandable tho :p.

If you guys would be teaming up with Tim Smit, that would be funny, I'd say :P

Well we didnt stabilize any of the footage, it was all filmed by hand. It's a decicion we made pretty early, and i'm happy the way it turned out. :-D

Oh, that's a coincidence! I'm in in Arnhem right now.

Really liked the movie, the tension was great. I was genuinely scared when the one entered the dark tunnel.

The only downside I found was the accent, as mentioned^^

Really nice short :)

Starring the hydra is a bit of a tease, it would be really see Valve getting some of the awesome creature concepts they've made over the years. At least some of them can appear in fan-made stuff.

Will you ever make more half-life themed films? I'd definitely like to see more.

Thanks for your feedback! Crazymapper and me are currently in our internship period and after that we'll hopefully graduate, so the chances of making more films together will be unlikely.

I think it is extremelly unlucky that we won't see more, as this was a very good start. My main problems with this though included:
- Accents, but you know that.
- Sound effects were starting and stopping at some very weird places.
- Some transitions from 1 shot to another were also done with some perculiarity, but there were others done with absolute perfection.
- Acting fluctuated wildly between all states of quality.
- You remind me how much I want the Hydra. You deserve a good kick to the balls.

I think you will find without good writers its best to keep dialog to a minimum, especially as a newbies to film.

Uh, good cinematography. Relatively okay audio. The editing was less then seamless.

Also, Cameraman's shadow.

That was fantastic - really superb.

I loved the costumes as well, and the setting was brilliant.

Great story as well.

I think it is cool you guys did it, and it must have been hard to get all those effects to work
but seriously tho.. it was just a bunch of walking and running.. I wasn't really entertained.. sorry :(
