Postby PureChaos on Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:17 pm

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a L4D server for my clan, but im having problems making the Lobby work correctly, and the steam/valve forums havent been much help. Can anyone here offer some assistance?

Thanks

PureChaos,
This depends on whether you are running your own server or paying for a hosted server at a service like GameServers.com. Your original statement seems to say you are paying for a hosted server but I did not want to blindly presume.

When you say the lobby is not working 'correctly' what do you mean, exactly? Help me understand and I will try to help further.

- does the server appear to be running ok, but no one can see the server?
- does the server appear to be running ok, but no one can connect the server (even though they can see it)?
- can you see the server running in HLSW?
- have you edited the server.cfg?
- does the server have a password set in the server.cfg?

Yes, its a server from gameservers.com

I can see it from hlsw, but what im trying to achive is when you go and "create a lobby" and set everything like you want, and then click connect, how do I get it to connect to my server each time & not just some random server?

If I recall correctly the "Create a Lobby" is for hosting games on your local machine and NOT a dedicated server. With a dedicated server at GameServers.com you simply need to connect to the server via IP using Steam or HLSW. Once in the server you can use HLSW to issue commands to the server, or you can issue server commands via the in game console. I usually set my laptop to the side and use HLSW to control the server during the game.

To connect via Steam:
- Start Steam
- In the bottom right corner in your taskbar RIGHT click on the Steam icon.
- Left click on "Servers"
- Click the "Favorites" tab
- Click "Add Server" and enter your server IP
- Join

To connect via HLSW:
- Start Steam
- Start HLSW and RIGHt click your server
- Left Click "Connect"

Once you are in the server your friends can see you playing in Steam Friends as well as HLSW. I also have a L4d Server (and L4D2) at GameServers.com. I will check the L4D game menus when I get home (at work now) and post any additional info later today.

mbombz, thanks for the info, I did not know it was for lan servers only, the only reason I was asking was when a couple of us play, we like to be certain charators, for instance, my wife likes to be zoey of course, me, frances, and so on. Ijust just a pain in the ass to constantly join & quit untill you get the charator you want

Yeah, I hear ya buddy. Starting a lobby works for internet games but the 'server' is the machine of the person who creates the lobby.

no, that's.. not true. you'll notice the options to change which type of server you'd like to connect to (official dedicated, dedicated, local server)...

you have to use sv_search_key; put
Code: Select all
sv_search_key <KEYWORD>
in your dedi's server.cfg, replacing <KEYWORD> with a keyword, and then when you're in a lobby, do the same in the console. this will only have an effect if you're the lobby leader. switch to allow unofficial dedicated servers, then start the game. if you set it up correctly and your server's not occupied, it should connect directly. you can set the server to be exclusive to a particular steam group, that way it won't be populated when you want to play (though I suppose it's possible your host has a special configuration).
