Survey for my dissertation

Postby CrowbarSka on Wed Mar 31, 2010 6:55 pm

I'm doing some research for my dissertation project on spatial navigation in computer game environments. As part of this research I need as many people as possible to complete this online questionnaire. I need a broad sample as well so it doesn't matter whether you play computer games or not (i.e. get your family and friends to do it too!).

http://tinyurl.com/uelsurvey

It takes about 5-10 minutes and involves some multiple choice questions based on pictures of 3D environments.

If you can spare a little time to fill it in I'd be very grateful.

There may be some issues viewing it on lower resolutions monitors, so please use your highest resolution possible.

Posted this at the end:
When doing the path finding part of this survey, the frame to the right failed to load option 12, 13, and 14. Though I was still able to finish it, by opening the image from option 11 and just changing the url to match the option. choice12.jpg, choice13.jpg, choice14.jpg

I enjoyed the test and the fact that you used Source for the pictures. Looking forward to more.

Thanks Gary, I just saw your response. Strange about the images not loading, I haven't had anyone else report this problem and the images are obviously there because you could access them manually. Hopefully it was just a one-off. Thanks again for your help!

No problem, it was an interesting test.

Also, it could be on my end, as my internet connection has not been constant lately.

Done!

RE: "How often do you find yourself getting lost in games, or stuck without knowing where to go next?"
This entirely depends upon the type of game. In a sandbox environment then next to never, but for a corridor shooter then probably quite regularly (especially if you have to flip switches/backtrack/uncover a hidden pathway/do jumping puzzles)

That was an interesting survey. Personally I'm very interested in the psychology of level design - to me it's very important that players know what they're doing, I think it's sloppy if a level designer creates levels that are entirely unintuitive.
There were other interesting things you touched upon in the questionnaire, such as which route you would prefer... I'll be interested to hear of the findings when you've finished your report (I wouldn't recommend publishing data until after your module is graded).

Good luck with your analysis!
