Haha imagine how serene it would be to just be flying through space listein to some sick beats. (ratatat - shempi :) )
just chillen. if they manage to pull this of with no lame drawbacks, i would definitely buy it.

The whole core-missions thing sounds awesome. Owning planets? Maybe gather several people into a guild, each a powerful entity in the game. You could stage star wars! Epic.

I've seen it before and it looks incredible.
There are a few technical faults, like the planets are really not in scale (perhaps the demonstrated planet was small on purpose) and the aestroid belt should have been rotating pretty quick around the planet, instead they just "stand" there and the player can completely stop and have look, which doesn't make sense. Last but not least, the planet itself should be rotating the sun, but it seems everything is just floating motionless in this engine... :(

And where the hell are the pilot's legs?!

I'd be more concerned about my torso (and upwards).

But yeah, hopefully orbits will actually work, as in you have to maneuver yourself into orbit.

I'm not so sure.
It will be easy to make an astroid belt rotate around the planet.
But creating a mechanism that lets you pilot into orbit means creating an entire gravity complex... That takes a lot of work.

It'd be impossible to render a whole planet (let alone a planetary system) to scale and render a person (for example) at the same time. Graphics hardware, and almost all vector operations for that matter, use a data format for numbers that doesn't have enough precision to represent such large number while keeping detail.

To give a precise example: Imagine earth is the center of space (0, 0, 0) and 1 unit is equal to one kilometer (in the same essence that 1 hammer unit is 1/16 of an inch). Objects on the surface of the earth would have a vertex accuracy of about 6 cm. Imagine the verticies in an NPCs face snapping to a 6cm grid.

Edit: coder0xff realizes a work around.

I can honestly say that having non-rotating planets and non-spinning asteroids will not be an issue for me.

Why?

Better rendering on the planet surface, lower FPS and generally being able to have more fun. Realism < Gameplay.

Although coming in at 40,000kph when a planet is rotating the opposite way would be insane.

Evochron Legends is better and NOT an MMO.

That was definitely incredible. The scale isn't right but that is an unprecedented step forward. It's a shame it will be an MMO because I'd LOVE for it to have tons of planet exploration, but I would still give it a try presuming it won't be a monthly fee like most MMOs are.
