Bad Company 2, worth the $30 on Steam?

Postby p1nkfl0yd1an on Tue Aug 10, 2010 5:54 am

Hey I was over at a friends house the other day and he was playing Bad Company 2 on his 360... it reminded me of how much fun Battlefield 1942 was. The mod Desert Combat was AWESOME, and Eve of Destruction wasn't half bad either. Well enough 1942 nostalgia... Anyone here recommend dropping the $30 on Bad Company 2?

Not better than Modern Warfare 2 in my opinion, but worth the money. They are very different in multiplayer. Bad Company 2 (played in Hardcore mode) makes you feel like a smaller part of something bigger, while in MW 2 (Hardcore mode, too) to me seems more Spec-Ops style. I like both and play both.

In my opinion BC2 puts MW2 to complete shame, but as Sathor stated, they're actually very different games online. BC2, even when not on Hardcore mode, is huge when compared to MW2 online. Hardcore just makes everything more realistic. You have no crosshair or a HUD, so you have to rely on your own intellect. Damage is also hyped up. I guess what Sathor might be trying to get at is that Hardcore makes it seem like you're really just a single infantryman rather than a running riot. Quite frankly no soldier gets killing sprees in the real world and it's damn near impossible to do that in Hardcore, unless you're a god damn recon. The only problem with Hardcore is that so many fucking people snipe, so you die almost every time you walk out in the slightest opening. It's because of this singular fact that I don't bother with Hardcore and stick to regular mode. Snipers are still annoying but they're not nearly as prominent. Class limits are a blessing in disguise, but so few servers use it.

Overall, BC2 was worth $50 in my opinion, and is definitely worth $30 on Steam. I say go for it. Perhaps you, Sathor, and I can get together and play sometime.

I think it is totaly worth it. In multiplayer it beats MW2 by far. Much better designed levels and the option that you can destroy them to flank an enemy is wonderfull :) But I think that it is actually the single-player campagin who really marks out the spot of how good bfbc2 really is.
They got a good mix of car races and some very fun gameplay challenges, like the one where you are a very cold and snowy land. So yes, buy it if you can. It is loads of fun, and even though I play very much quake,cs,tf2. Witch I think are very clean and fast games. Bfbc2 is not celan and fast :) But it works...

I was reluctantly peer pressured into buying it for $50 when it first came out and I haven't regretted it once.

It's definitely worth grabbing for $30, especially if you were a fan of 1942/DC.

It's like TF2 with huge maps and more gun. I find that it's a lot more fun than MW2 simply because of the scale of things and the emphasis on teamwork.

Thanks for all the replies. Definitely am putting it on my to-buy list. I was 10 seconds away from downloading it last night... then I remembered that my 8800GT and e6600 probably wouldn't pull any sort of decent frame rate. Either way it looks like it's time for the dreaded once every 3 years upgrade. At least for once I'm happy with my case, power supply, optical drives, as well as peripherals.

When I last upgraded I had the cash for EVERYTHING except a new PCIx card. So I got one of the damn ASRock boards with both PCIx as well as AGP on board. I ran my x850 into the ground after a while and found an awesome deal on the 8800GT for something like $100 at a random shop in town. Needless to say if you're familiar with the ASRock board I'm referring to, you know the PCIx slot only runs at 4x... which I'd bet money won't satisfy bad company 2. Anyway now I've got the damned upgrade fever. Thanks again for the responses though, you've all convinced me to work a few more hours and shop around. While we all bemoan the constant upgrade cycle native to PC gaming, I think we all secretly enjoy the visits to tomshardware.com to check out the latest frame rate charts, comparison shopping on new egg, and obsessive compulsive reading of EVERY review on what we're browsing.

Maybe this time around I'll go for broke and finally get a grownup motherboard with some OC features and splooge my summer savings on a silly card. If anyone's got any suggestions for board+cpu and a new card I'd appreciate it. No need to clutter up the Gaming board with them though, just PM me if anything comes to mind. Even though I gave up mapping, Interlopers remains my go-to forum for all PC gaming related matters.

I run an 8800, I pull a good 40fps with everything maxed :P

The BC2 beta was certainly playable on my 8800GT.

BC2 certainly wasn't worth any time for me. I played it for a day and lost interest. I'm lucky it was a gift or it would have been a waste of 50 dollars, or even in this case 30 dollars.

In other words, if you have modern warfare or battlefield 2, BC2 is definitely passable imo.
