ID Tech 5 - Rage / Doom 4

Postby Bronto on Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:05 pm

What do you guys think of ID Tech 5? I know much info hasn't been released outside of the tools demo at QuakeCon 07.

It looks pretty sweet to me. Although I've never been a fan of ID's models and animations.

ID Tech 5, UDK and CryEngine 3... oh my

Valve better surprise me or I may make the switch.

Valve won't surprise you, their engine seems to work fine for telling the story that they want their games to tell.

Besides, I think they are going for games that don't push consumers to need incredible computers every time a new game comes out...

HOWEVER, it does reflect poorly on any game company when they are behind on the tech side of things, well, besides face poser...

For me, no engine has ever come close to Quake1/Source for feeling 'solid' and real. Later ID techs, UDK and Cry Engines have always felt a bit unsubstantial to me. It's difficult to explain, but for that reason alone I'll be championing Source for some time to come.

Exactly my feeling. In Unreal and Crysis you just don't feel like you're walking on solid ground, it's strange, and the movement is just off. :|

Oh please. Starting again with the "idtech4/ue3 looks plastic" crap? People on a game design forum should know better. It's just a bunch of bad design choices. If artists choose to give everything excessive specularity or if they choose to creat a non solid ground, the engine is not at fault. Also IMO comparing Cryengine with idtech or UE just proves how little people know about engines. Cryengine 2 so far powers just one game, and it's more of a tech demo than a game. Cryengine 1 was created to earn money and showcased in a tech demo called far Cry. It failed, there weren't any other Cryengine 1 based games. Proper engine must: 1) be sold for money 2) get popular by having helpful tools and large userbase. CE1 failed at both tasks and same goes for Cryengine 2 so far. Cryengine 3 is a minor upgrade (or downgrade, depening on how you look). Sorry but this makes CE no better than hundreds of other unnamed game engines powering games that are long forgotten.
All UEngines and all idtechs were very successful, which should make you wonder if they really are similar to CE.

Tell you what, IMO idtech5's success doesn't depend AT ALL on how the first one or two games on it will look. It will depend on 1) tools and ease of implementation 2) price of the license 3) scalability on older hardware. You can call me on that 5 years from now.

CryEngine didn't sell because the license is ridiculously expensive. It has been used for a variety of projects (mostly FC related ones though), and the volume of quality mods are a testament to the ease of use of it's toolset.

TBH I'll wait until I hear more about modding tools before I start deciding "this is the next gen engine for me". Right now I would probably point people towards the NS2 engine, which lets you port over Source maps and materials with ease.
Back on topic - I can't say I have high expectations for the IDT5 given how all ID games are a pain to mod for.

Well I do love id, if only because they steadily make their older games open source (doom3 soon if I recall correctly), and because most of their games (if not all?) can be played on linux. So for that I'm already inclined to buy rage, not to mention from what I've read them say about where they want it to go I get the impression it might be alright.

Carmack has said they specifically want to address this issue with Id Tech 5. He said they are working on getting the tools to be very user friendly this time.
Wikipedia wrote:The engine comes with a new content-creation tools package called id Studio, which is supposed to be much more user-friendly and polished than in earlier versions. Previously, content creation required artists to run various command line tools beyond the level editor's own tools, while id Tech 5 allows for all work to be done 'in-engine'.]

Yep, Carmack has stated he wishes to open source Doom 3/Id Tech4 soon. Most likely slightly before Rage next year.
He is a big supporter of open source.
Wikipedia wrote:The id Tech 4 (Doom 3 Engine) will also be open source. At QuakeCon 2007, Carmack said to LinuxGames: "I mean I won't commit to a date, but the Doom 3 stuff will be open source."

Rage is looking pretty awesome, and if the toolset is done right it could become another modding favorite.

Semi-On-Topic:
Anyone looking forward to Voxels in 6-8 years?

The eventual open source and cross platform support catches my interest.

The amount of fanboyism I have for Id is not describable in words. I've been looking forward to their new engine since tech 4 came out. As soon as tech 5 comes out, I'm buying a new videocard and switching over to that engine.

Haven't actually gotten involved with previous ID engines, but damn, the level editor for this one looks just unbelievable :[]: Another thing to look forward to in 2011!

Does this mean no modding tools ? Or simply no licences
