Lost the argument.

sigh,

kids see things different than we adults, altho we can talk to them and put into context for them it doesn't always work
for example, I was afraid as a little kid so go swimming in the pool after I saw the movie JAWS
even tho I knew there was no way in earth the shark could get in the pool, I was still scared

also, kids copy allot of adult behavior and behavior they see, I'm not saying they will pick up an axe and start swinging it around :P but they can hurt other kids by punching them or some shit

look I'm not a kids psychologist, but saying it's fine for 8 year olds to play games like l4d2 is a bit.. retarded

How is it retarded? I've been playing violent games since I used a computer and that never caused any trouble for me, I didn't suddenly start punching kids or some shit. I haven't even physically hurt anyone really, it's retarded to think a video game is going to make a kid violent.

obviously, not every kid will get violent, I was blasting off knee caps when I was 10 as well in soldier of fortune :P
but don't act like it's all fine, it's for adults for a reason... I don't understand how you don't get that ? :S
it's not like I'm attacking any of ya'll, I disagree with that jack thompson guy, but can't you seriously see kids should just be kids and not be playing violent games and stuff?

I never play l4d2 when my nephew is around for that reason, or I'm not letting him play GTA4 etc
I'll just letting him play portal instead :D (which he sucks @)

I've looked into this stuff before.

The Fact is,

Kids don't get violent from just playing games normally.
Maybe from playing them obsessively, but more on that in a sec.

Kids who do go out and start killing people based on a game?
Their crazy, if entertainment makes you go out and kill a person then you could have been triggered from just thinking about killing...

Now Obsessive playing? That could cause violence, but not unless you are already obsessively playing a game which in its self can be caused by mental issues.

thats it, Games themselves don't make you go out and start shooting people.
If you listen to people like Jack then its your choice, at this point I think we should consider he himself might be going insane...

But lets be serious here... Its obvious Jack Thompson was beaten by his dad every night because his dad would drink at the Arcade and yell "EAT THE FUCKING DOTS JACK!!" while reenacting what the ghosts do to pac-man for holding still.

What do you mean "don't get that", it's a matter of opinion, feel free to find any scientific evidence that violent video games are bad for kids.

All tests I've read about have come to the conclusion that video games are good stress and anger relievers, a kid who just spent 30 minutes blasting zombies is less inclined to go out and punch someone than someone who's filled with rage and does nothing about it.

might I add, I never said they will start picking up guns etc, if they do.. there was obviously something wrong with the kid already

but like it or not, violent games do effect kids of -10 years

I bet there are studies about it, don't know any of them tho

dudes? come one be honest, you think it's good for your kids that is under 10 to slaughter waves of humans
hear curse words etc? kids are like sponges you know

but what ever, if you feel this way.. it's up to you.. I just know I'm not letting my kid play violent games until I feel like he's old enough :) especially since games are getting more and more realistic

All tests would be done with tweens, Don't think they would get the permission to use kids below 10.

There are statistics and I've read them, Same things... Its more of a reliever then an encourager.

But under 10 is pretty obvious.
I'm not saying It is good.

One thing Is possible,
The normal gaming spent by a kid in early years could cause mental issues.
Leading to violence.

But honestly, I've seen young kids play violent games but I have never seen one who was super young even have the attention span for a violent game.

heh, I was playing doom when I was like 8. I know that the effect it had on me wasn't "oh my god, this is so awesome and cool, I want to be like this/live like this" as much as "wow, this sucks, I'd hate to be this guy, oh man, those guys on the skewers are still twitching, this is kinda unsettling"

Maybe my response wasn't typical (or maybe it was? Mao, how did the violence make you feel?), but I think we have a long ways to go before even 8 year old kids don't sense a disconnect between shooting zombies in l4d, versus killing people in real life.

And I agree with source maps when he says, Kids are sponges, but I don't think that they're absorbing what we think they're absorbing.
