The Mass Effect series has run on the same engine since the first, with minor improvements to the graphics. The PS3 port of ME2 is going to run on the newer build of UE3 (Bioware's customized version that is), and I've seen the PS3 demo. It looks better but it's not a monumental improvement. Metal Gear Solid 4 was developed on a custom engine, was it not? They had to build the engine on top of everything else, so of course it took that long to make. Half Life 2 took 6 years to make because Valve was developing Source as well, not to mention they nearly went bankrupt from a hacker.

I do agree that it's being announced rather soon, but I don't think comparing its dev time to MGS4 is a strong argument.

it sure looks good but the story is the same as hunderds of shooters... Help mankind or the earth gets it....
it sad to see developers love cash.... i think they had to release it from EA (evil company that kills good game's in a finger snap)....

for example DR age looks good but thats not the only thing you need for a good game!
also take a look how EA liked to fuck up the C&C series its such a shame, another exampe fifa :/ how original just change the title on the box from 2010 to 2011 and we got a nice game to rip you of...

and how the hell are they able to produce a good game in such small time frame.... for example MGS4 took kojima 5 years... and you can see it all back in the game.... it has a good story line!!!

but enough bitching i hope game developers will be more original again instead of copy catting another hero saves the world game.....

lol I'd say that the one thing Dragon Age doesn't have is particularly up to date looks. And whilst being a huuuuge ME fan I'm enjoying DA to the point where I'm doubting whether I really actually like ME 2... it feels very stiff compared to DA (when it comes to for example the paragon / renegade system and group interaction) Yeah and like Rafael said the plot is quite thin... I mean the final scenes were epic and all but overall it was very rigid. (not to mention the final boss :( )

And you're right a game needs more than just good looks but DA has some superb writing (man your companions are awesome + they did a good job on making the quests have some interesting plot twists) as we've come to expect from Bioware and I dare say it's one of the last games out today which actually has a soul to it.
Still haven't seen the bloody ending cos it's longer than I thought.

As for MGS 4... having played MGS to MGS 4, I can say that's definitely the worst. My god, Otacon crying with his laptop + overall weird jap-drama you only see in anime, cutscenes to the extreme (you know what you're in for with MGS but some of these were ridiculous) to the point where you defeat a couple of badguys, walk 2 metres and another scene triggers! araarragh! The thing I did like about MGS 4 is that the bleak future sketched in the game with PMC's fighting wars for the sake of it and ID-locked weapons is something we're bordering on right now so in that sense it's a good warning / social criticism thing I guess.

The thing about DA was the art style wasn't very grounded. Some areas' art styles differed so much that they looked like they were from completely different games. If you actually read one of the early reviews, one of the guys at Bioware states the same. I think Bioware just experiments more with Dragon Age than they do with Mass Effect. I have high hopes for DA2. I can't really judge ME3 since there hasn't been any actual information other than a pre-rendered reveal trailer and that it'll be using an updated engine and that it's coming out soon.

I think they got the right idea with DA2, when I demoed it Mike Laidlaw was explaining how their planning on keeping the art style consistent. Also brought up the reasons for their choice in making a single character for you to play.

I think it will be better gameplay wise on consoles too. (at least what I got to try out was pretty nice and felt simple)
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen

Meh, I'm just in the mindset that ME3 isn't going to live up to the series. Ever since ME2, which showed tell tale signs of not giving the game the time it needs in dev (sorrow touched on my biggest hate: okays so it was a human reaper, and reapers take the form of whatever species it consumes... then why the f*** are all the other reapers the same and they've been wiping out different species since the beginning of time?!), I just can't bring myself to be optimistic.
The inspiration as to why I'm here: Adam Foster; Minerva. Great job man.
