Dead Space 2, your thoughts?

Postby nub on Sun Jan 30, 2011 7:58 am

To start off I would like to warn all readers that this thread contains SPOILERS. DO NOT read this if you have not beaten the game yet. I'm not using spoiler tags since it will just botch my post.

I'll try to keep this as short as possible to not bore you.

I was pretty much satisfied with how Visceral decided to end the game. I'm happy that Isaac didn't end up sacrificing himself, or suffering some kind of grim fate (well, he almost did until Ellie saved his bacon). I was also pretty happy that Ellie lived as well. I could understand Isaac being the sole survivor of the Ishimura incident, but for no one to escape the Sprawl with him would have been a bit redundant.

One thing I loved in Dead Space 1 was when Kendra died. You end up despising her once she reveals she's an agent and tells you about the Government's involvement, and then you get to see a gigantic tentacle smash her against the landing pad, slide her around and into a corner then rip her to pieces. Visceral added a couple (or 3, if you despised Nolan for stabbing Ellie's eye out) more satisfying deaths, including Hans and Daina. Daina reminded me of Kendra so watching her die was especially awesome. Hans death was just simply brutal since he was already half dead from the Marker explosion. That fight between him and Isaac was so crazy.

Everything about the game was superb. Visceral really stepped it up and made all aspects awesome. No giant bosses, but the seamless cutscenes were so thrilling I got goosebumps. The new guns, suits, and necromorphs were awesome, especially the bird-like ones that charge at you from around corners (Stalkers I believe). The AI was pretty damn smart. However, one irk I had with the game was how Visceral found it necessary to drop multiple Necromorphs right on top of you in really crowded areas. It just becomes one big cluster fuck and I cant imagine how I would get out of it alive on Hardcore difficulty.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my thoughts. How did you guys like the game?

Didn't read your post at all because I don't like spoilers :L at the moment, I don't know why, every corner I see, I'm absolutely shitting myself. I peek right, step back, peek left, rail gun ready and aimed. Only really jumped once, just before the first Store, when you move into the room and that necromorph jumps up at you and I had to go change my pants. I was firing everywhere and ended up clubbing him to death with my fist, heart's still racing :L

How do you feel about the game in general?

Expertly paced, intense atmosphere and very fun to play.
I finished it almost in one sitting and immediately started all over again in higher difficulty. And usually when I finish a singleplayer game I never replay it ever again. It was that good.

The game wasn't scary for me except for few startles from the cheap doom type of monsters from closet tricks. Nothing's scary after Amnesia.

The real tension comes in big fights with lots of monsters coming at you, makes you a bit of a tactician when thinking how to get most of your weapons without getting surrounded and killed, or how to fight in closed space. I found myself laying traps for monsters that would charge on me and clumping groups of enemies together like cattle to deal the most damage with explosives. Throwing the claws of the dead enemies to save ammo. I fell in love with the combat immediately and I was coming back for more :)

In general Dead Space 2 maintains a good quality in all aspects of a linear shooter. It's not perfect. The story was kinda sloppy and just a bad excuse for more monster shooting but still had a good amount of depth in it.
Graphics are nice to watch and for the leveldesign extremely good job, you actually play almost half of the game backwards and that won't even bother you for a second :D
The weapons are good in most parts and makes you think what is the best weapon for different situations but you kinda ignore all other weapons in the store once you get a good setup figured out.

Now I could go forever writing every aspect of the game but I fear no one wouldn't bother reading it so I'll leave more thoughts from the game to you :)

Overall a pleasant experience but I'd have changed a few things.

1. Calm the fuck down with the mass mobs. My god, by the mining cave section I was swamped with necro's. It wasn't scary, just frustrating.

2. They spend all the trouble making the Ishimura and taking us back through it and they didn't even use that song from DS1 when you started a chapter.

4. Hardcore mode and all you get is a foam hand?

5. End boss, what the fuck. Beautiful etc but so unfair. I could barely see the babies.

But yeah I enjoyed it. Started playing it again yesterday and then tried some extraction. But now I must get back to work :P

I was actually pretty disappointed with the final boss. It seemed more like he was fighting in his mind rather than in reality and it ended up nuking the entire marker apparently. On top of that it was so straight forward that it wasn't intense at all. You just get bum rushed by children and exploding infant necros while trying to destroy "Nicole," which then reveals a big glowing organ inside the Marker that's waiting to get torn to pieces? It doesn't move, you don't get pulled in to the air by any giant tentacles, you just stand there and fire at it until it dies. The sheer size of the Marker and the flames engulfing it was amazing looking but it wasn't as frightening or interesting as a monumental creature that outsizes you 10,000:1 since those aspects don't play a role in the battle at all. I was hoping for something like the Hivemind, but more ferocious since the "convergence" was happening. Like all the necros coming together to form something massive. Then once it's killed, it begins to react, which would in turn destroy the new marker. Kind of like how Isaac fought Hivemind while the gigantic piece of land was falling towards the planet, which destroyed the Marker when it made impact.

I was basically hoping for something truly climactic, like a creature so large you can't fit its entirety in one frame. You start at the base and work your way up using your suit's flight system, destroying key points as you go, until you finally get to the head, with catwalks surrounding it (for observing the Marker I guess). It might seem a bit cliche but it would have been kick ass. I guess I don't fully understand the logic behind it. Maybe Isaac had the biggest connection to the marker, so only he could destroy it with his mind.

TL;DR

The boss was very lackluster, aside from the visuals. Something that actually looked alive and was ready to kill you would have made it 10x more exciting.

PS: For anyone who plans on watching the new movie, don't bother. It starts out with god awful CG (and comes back to it every now and then) and they had a collaboration of artists make the film, so it periodically changes to a different art style and it makes the whole thing seem inconsistent. There were only two artists I actually liked. They did the same thing with the Dante's Inferno film, and that basically ruined it.
