There are some interesting gameplay aspects to the game. I only played through the intro so far so I ahve not had to fight any zombies but I thought it was cool how you have to bash doors down by moving your mouse forward and backwards. There appears to be a lot of interactivity within the game as well. My only problem, and it seems like I have this issue with a lot of games outside the source engine and frostbite, playing the game for an extended amount of time gives me headaches. I am not sure what it is, and it could be a coincidence but still...

I would say I plan to play it more often this week but to be honest with the BF3 beta out I am not sure if I will be gaming in any other game but that. I do have a lot of holiday time coming up, three day work week next week and a two day work week the next week, so I will likely have some free time to delve into the game more. If you can hold off till then I can give you more feedback.

you can always watch the numerous reviews on the game. i heard that it was pretty lame overall but you should at least watch the ign review or see if Zero Punctuation has done a review for it.

Yeah I've been looking at some stuff online about it. Honestly it seems to be borderline within my interest zone so I thought I'd ask my interloper mates :D

Alright I just beat the game last night. Overall I would say that the game is not great.

Pros:
The combat system is absolutely great. It's truly a joy to slice apart and crush zombies up close. When you get a really good hit on a zombie, you really feel the impact of it and it's quite rewarding. Being able to directly target certain points on your enemies makes for some good combat. Depending on your weapon you can either break, or cut off certain parts of your enemies.

The drop in/drop out multiplayer is a lot of fun, though I did find that playing alone was a bit more fun

The weapon upgrades and modification system was done quite nicely, it's a good way to reward players for exploring and collecting everything. Being able turn a broomstick into a mighty electrical boomstick of death is great fun.

Cons:
The real killer of this game is the story. I'm not even going to start trying to explain it but let me say this game has one of the worst plots I've ever experienced. That is if you can even consider a bunch of nonsensical, terribly written, meaningless cutscenes a plot. To make it worse, the characters in the game are all terribly annoying and voice acting is laughable at best. I would say that after watching every cutscene all I could do was say what the fuck, and try to forget the terrible shit I just saw.

The bottom line, if you really really want to play the game, I suggest you immediately skip all the cutscenes and just focus on the zombie smashing. Also, never take a quest where you have to follow an npc, never.

It's alright, but definitely not worth the hype. Looks good and runs great as well, though the visuals aren't as impressive as I originally thought they were now that it's released and I've had a run through it. That doesn't mean it doesn't look good.

The combat is pretty fun at first, but the game just gets really stale after a while. Nothing evolves. You might build a fancy new weapon, but all you're doing with it is bludgeoning or slicing zombies, just for more damage and maybe burning or electrocuting them in the process. It might feel great, at first, when you get a massive hit in on a zombie and demolish it completely, but the feeling quickly wears off over time.

My biggest problem with this game is the characters you can choose. Three of them are has-beens who's pasts are "dark and full of despair." Their biographies aren't interesting and their personalities are hard to like. The Chinese woman (sharp weapons specialist) is the only character that's at all likeable. The rest are just foul-mouthed and boring.

That's all nit-picking though. I mean, you don't need to have a super polished character to be able to bash some zombie heads in. That's really all this game is about; you bludgeon zombies nonstop until your character levels up, which lets you obtain skills that allow you to do it more effectively. There's a story and a main quest line, but it doesn't drive the game much at all. I can't find a better comparison than Dead Rising 2, really. All it consists of is killing zombies, creating nifty weapons that lose their appeal over time, and basic RPG elements. Dead Island is just a little more complex and more enjoyable.

TL;DR

Don't buy it if you want it to last for a long time, or if you're looking for a good storyline. Buy it for the online zombie slaughtering and nothing more. I'd honestly wait for it to drop in price. I'm guessing it will only take a few months for that to happen.
