It's alright, but definitely not worth the hype. Looks good and runs great as well, though the visuals aren't as impressive as I originally thought they were now that it's released and I've had a run through it. That doesn't mean it doesn't look good.
The combat is pretty fun at first, but the game just gets really stale after a while. Nothing evolves. You might build a fancy new weapon, but all you're doing with it is bludgeoning or slicing zombies, just for more damage and maybe burning or electrocuting them in the process. It might feel great, at first, when you get a massive hit in on a zombie and demolish it completely, but the feeling quickly wears off over time.
My biggest problem with this game is the characters you can choose. Three of them are has-beens who's pasts are "dark and full of despair." Their biographies aren't interesting and their personalities are hard to like. The Chinese woman (sharp weapons specialist) is the only character that's at all likeable. The rest are just foul-mouthed and boring.
That's all nit-picking though. I mean, you don't need to have a super polished character to be able to bash some zombie heads in. That's really all this game is about; you bludgeon zombies nonstop until your character levels up, which lets you obtain skills that allow you to do it more effectively. There's a story and a main quest line, but it doesn't drive the game much at all. I can't find a better comparison than Dead Rising 2, really. All it consists of is killing zombies, creating nifty weapons that lose their appeal over time, and basic RPG elements. Dead Island is just a little more complex and more enjoyable.
TL;DR
Don't buy it if you want it to last for a long time, or if you're looking for a good storyline. Buy it for the online zombie slaughtering and nothing more. I'd honestly wait for it to drop in price. I'm guessing it will only take a few months for that to happen.
